Zastava cars were produced in Serbia from 1953 till 2008. The company was located in the Kragujevac city. During the first year of its existence, Zastava was carrying out licensed production of Jeep SUVs, later – of cars of the Italian company Fiat Automobiles S.p.A. Initially the vehicles were made for the Eastern European market, but in the 70s they started to be sold almost around the world. More than 4 million cars were manufactured during the years of company operation.

For example, the volume of the boot of the Yugo Skala 5-door hatchback (1990–2008) could be expanded to 1,000 litres, with the rear seats folded.

Zastava cars were notable for their affordable prices. The 101 saloons, which came to the market in 1971, and the Koral cabriolets of 1990 were considered the cheapest in the world. The latter had the top equipped with an electrohydraulic drive usually available for more expensive cars.

The cars were characterized by high fuel efficiency and excellent dynamics, and had high-performance engines. The 1300 saloon produced in 1961 had the top speed of more than 150 km/h, due to which it was the fastest car in Yugoslavia. And the Koral 3-door hatchback, launched in 1990, was the most powerful car in the model range. It was equipped with a 1.6 litre 95 hp petrol engine in combination with a 5-speed manual transmission.

Despite the affordability of the vehicles, their technical equipment was at the top level. The 10 model of 2006 had a factory-installed air conditioner. An audio system with CD player, heated windscreen, electrically adjustable steering column were offered optionally for many vehicles of the make.
