BMW 5 Saloon (E39) cars: technical specifications, versions and trim levels
The BMW 5 series (the E39) are five-seat saloons which were produced from 1995 to 2003. Over a million of these cars were made during the years of the production. Compared to its predecessor, the E34, the saloon featured larger dimensions, due to which the cabin become even more spacious. In order to improve the steering response and safety, they increased the stiffness of the body as well. The drag coefficient was reduced to 0.27. According to the manufacturer itself, it was the best index in the segment as of 1997. The technical specifications of the BMW 5 series (the E39)
The length of the saloon was 4,775 mm, its width was 1,800 mm and the height was 1,435 mm. Inside the car, there was enough space both for the front and rear passengers. The capacity of the luggage compartment was 460 l. The ride height reached 140 mm.
Main versions
There were 45 versions of the BMW 5 series sedans (the E39) made during the years of the production: 20 petrol and 4 diesel before the facelift of 2000; 15 petrol and 5 diesel after it.
One of the most high-powered configurations was 286 hp 540i AT (petrol). Its 8-cylinder V-engine had a high torque of 440 Н⋅м which was achieved at the wide range of revolutions. The car showed excellent dynamics both during the start and while gaining speed afterwards. The vehicle accelerated to 100 km/h in 6.4 seconds and could run at the maximum speed of 250 km/h. Meanwhile, the fuel consumption was rather high: 18.2 l per 100 km in the urban area, 12.3 l in the mixed cycle and 8.9 on a highway. The carrying capacity of the version was 530 kg.
The trim packages of the 5 series (the E39)
Apart from the basic package, the BMW E39 (1995–2003) saloons had Executive, Highline Exclusive and Highline Sport ones. Exclusive, Lifestyle and Sport were limited editions. It was possible to order additional Business, Premium, Exclusive, M Sport packages of options.
The Exclusive package of options included electric sunroof, heated, electronically adjustable front seats, the driver’s seat was also fitted with the position memory function.
Vehicles of the limited Sport edition differed from other versions with 17-inch multi spoke wheels with 235/45 R 17 low profile tyres, multifunctional leather steering wheel with the brand logo, sports suspension, aerodynamic body kit, chrome exhaust pipe trim. Velour mats, decorative inserts made from natural wood and matte chrome attracted attention to the interior. The level of safety was traditionally high: the saloon could boast of 10 airbags, active headrests and a great number of electronic systems.
