Information
Daimler is a famous British make of luxury cars. Its history started in 1896, when Henry John Lawson founded a company in London – Daimler Motor Company Limited. Car manufacturing under this brand stopped in 2007. The multinational company Tata Motors now owns the rights to the brand. Daimler cars were always characterised by top quality and high performance, and were rich in features and comfortable. These cars were preferred by members of royal families of many countries, such as the United Kingdom, Sweden, Japan, and Spain.
Technical characteristics of Daimler cars
The company developed many innovative solutions during the years of its existence. One of these is an advantageous combination of the Fluidrive hydraulic clutch and the Wilson direct-shift gearbox. Both units were installed for the first time on Light Double-Six models. Later, this combination was implemented on all Daimler models.
The Knight engine was another innovative solution of its time. It was installed in cars of the brand up to the mid-1930s. It used sleeve valves instead of conventional poppet valves. This design made the engine remarkably quiet.
For a number of its cars, such as the DE27, DE36, and DR450, the manufacturer used a rather unusual body type – the limousine. These cars could seat up to 8 passengers and provided the ultimate in comfort. The DE27 and DE36 models were the world’s first cars equipped with electric window raisers, and the DS420 could be equipped with a personal computer, a printer and other equipment.
The engines installed in the cars of the make were characterised by high performance. For instance, the 4.5-litre, 8-cylinder engine with hemispheric combustion chambers used in the DR450 limousines allowed these stately vehicles, weighing over 2 tons, to go from 0 to 100 km/h in 11 seconds and reach a top speed of 183 km/h. It is interesting to note that separate exhaust systems were designed for each row of cylinders. This engine was also installed in SP250 roadsters and Majestic Major saloons.
