Information
Plymouth cars were produced in North America from 1928 till 2001. The enterprise was a part of the Chrysler Corporation. It was founded by Walter Chrysler to compete with the Ford and General Motors companies, and offered more inexpensive models. The production facilities were located in Auburn Hills, Michigan, the United States.
Technical specifications of Plymouth cars
The vehicles were equipped with high-performance engines. For example, the Barracuda coupe of 1964 had a Commando V8 273 petrol power unit. The carburettor was of the four-barrel type. Due to the compression increased to 10.5 Bar and the sport camshaft, the engine output was 235 hp. The coupe was a representative of the Pony car class. The second generation Barracuda, launched in 1968, was equipped with A 318 and LA 340 Chrysler’s engines, with 5.2 and 5.6 litre displacement, correspondingly. Their power was increased to 300 hp. Later, the manufacturer started to install the V8 HEMI 7 litre 415 hp power unit on the cars. The coupe came with the TorqueFlite automatic transmission.
A unibody with twice increased stiffness was a revolutionary solution for the North American automotive industry. Apart from this, anti-corrosion treatment became more thorough. This body type was used, for example, in the Plymouth Fury cars of 1960.
The design of the models that debuted in the 1950s was considered to be innovative. For instance, the exterior of the Belvedere saloon produced in 1955 was mentioned by the Society of Illustrators as the most beautiful.
The Prowler roadster created in the retro style looked extraordinary. It was manufactured in a limited series in 1997–2002. The car was assembled manually. Besides the primer, its body was coated with two layers of paint. This allowed to make scratches and chips, which could appear during the car use, less noticeable.
Despite their affordability, the cars were feature-rich. For example, some trim levels of the Plymouth Breeze saloon, produced in the late 90s, included cruise control, power windows, power mirrors, central lock, ABS, and a sunroof. Available as standard was an air conditioner and an audio system with cassette player and 6 speakers.
