Spare parts for your car
Panther sports cars were produced by the Panther Westwinds Ltd, founded in Great Britain in 1972. Their headquarters was located in Surrey. The originator of the company was Robert Jankel, who decided to produce retro-styled cars. They were hand-assembled in limited series. Jaguar and other well-known car makers supplied parts for Panther. Owners of the company changed twice: the South Korean Jindo Group bought it in 1980, SsangYong Group – in 1987. Car production ended in 1999.
Technical specifications of Panther cars
These vehicles resembled models of the 1930s in design. One exclusion was the brake discs – they were installed on both axles for safety. The J72 roadster launched in 1973 had a tubular frame reinforced with wood. Body panels were made of aluminium. The Solo 2 all-wheel-drive coupe and targa launched in 1990 had a monocoque body. It was made of aluminium, carbon fibre and kevlar. Glass fibre panels were installed on the frame. The key feature was a rather rare layout – mid-engined, i.e. the engine is within the wheelbase. Due to this, the sports car had outstanding dynamics and was stable at high-speed cornering.
The J72 model, a 2-seater, used the Jaguar XK6 V-type petrol engine with two overhead camshafts. This 6-cylinder engine had a displacement of 4.2 litres and outputted 190 hp. Top speed of the car was 183 km/h. Starting from 1974, the J72 roadsters were equipped with Jaguar V12 engines. It had one overhead camshaft. Engine displacement was 5.3 litres, power output – 285 hp. The car accelerated to 220 km/h. Also, such engines were offered for the De Ville 1974 saloon and convertible.
The exterior of the Solo coupe which was available in 1989–1990 featured some unusual solutions. Particularly, it had hidden headlights. A well-known British designer, Ken Greenley, was the author of this project. He designed the exterior for many SsangYong models.
