Glow Plug Relay for auto

Ignition system auto parts: Glow Plug Relay

How to detect malfunction of the glow plug control unit

You can inspect the component for body defects and loss of contacts on your own. However, thorough diagnostics requires a visit to the service station. You can detect that the glow plug control unit requires diagnostics by the following criteria:

  1. Pre-heating system fault alarm lights on the dashboard.
  2. When the ignition key is turned, the pre-heating system does not work:
    • the glow plugs relay click is not heard;
    • the indicator lamp on the instrument panel does not light;
    • the indicator lights for a very short time, or, vice versa, does not go off after 5-6 seconds;
    • when the ignition key is turned into the starting position, the engine does not start, starts with difficulty, or runs erratically after start.

Reasons of glow plug control unit malfunctions

The most frequent fault of the glow plug control unit is failure of the microcircuit responsible for the glow plug voltage control. This may occur due to damage to the component body, or due to power surges in the electric circuit of the vehicle.

The control unit often fails due to corrosion of metal terminals and contacts, which is caused by temperature fluctuations and moisture.

Cables can be damaged due to improper installation of the components, mechanical damage caused by impacts and road accidents.

The glow plugs control unit will not work correctly if it does not receive, or receives incorrect information from the engine temperature sensor.

Glow plug control unit may fail due to the use of poor quality components, or untimely maintenance.

Repairing and replacing glow plug control unit

The glow plug control unit is not subject to repair. A faulty component is to be replaced.

To make the pre-heating system of a diesel engine operate efficiently, the component should be installed correctly and match the model of the vehicle.

Component location depends on the model of the vehicle. It can be found in the vehicle documentation. In most passenger cars, this component is in the engine compartment. In some models, it is under the instrument panel, above the relay box.

To replace the glow plug control unit, do the following:

  1. Switch off the ignition.
  2. Disconnect the battery.
  3. Release the retaining clips, unscrew nuts that hold the glow plug control unit in place.
  4. Disconnect connectors.
  5. Remove the faulty glow plug control unit.
  6. Install a new component.
  7. Connect in reverse order.

If the glow plug control unit has been replaced properly, then when the ignition key is turned into the pre-heating position, the glow plugs are connected to the battery. An indicator will light up on the instrument panel simultaneously, and will go off as soon as the engine has been warmed up for 3-5 seconds and is ready to start.
