Spark Plug for auto

Ignition system auto parts: Spark Plug

Spark plug is necessary to ignite air fuel mixture in the internal-combustion engine. In the ignition coil a voltage appears that comes from spark plugs to the engine compartment. Between two electrodes ignition spark appears and creates a small flash in the engine compartment. It starts the cylinders. Spark plugs are made of steel and have a screw thread. Due to it they are attached in the engine basic block. Under optimal conditions spark plugs clear themselves. If they overheat (because of temperature difference, for instance), this may result in ignition failure.

Motor mechanic can see the correct engine adjustment relying on spar plugs condition after long period of their use. When inspecting the plugs, the specialist can see if the oil level in the mixture is low or high. An important moment is the distance between electrodes. In the engine must be plugs with a correct heat rating. If you are not sure about these two points, pay attention to the maintenance instruction. There will be not a problem to replace the plugs as for definite car models there are definite spark plugs.

Any car owner can replace the spark plugs. First remove the spark plug pin. Then unscrew the spark using the spark plug socket and insert a new spark plug. After this replace the pins. When installing the spark plug, be careful not to deform the outer electrode. In our online store you can buy ignition cable, ignition module and ignition coils. Moreover, here you will find original spare car parts, such as brake shoe facings, horns, mudguards, window lifters, clutch discs, tie rods and shock absorbers.

Spark plugs failure

  • working surface is worn-out;
  • insulator is cracked or soiled;
  • there is a soot deposit on the component;
  • distance between electrodes doesn't meet the standard;
  • part is spoiled.

Signs of spark plugs failure

  • exhaust with high CO content;
  • the engine starts with difficulties but the starter works properly;
  • vehicle dynamic performance decrease;
  • considerable vibration of the engine when driving (mainly idling);
  • drop of traction and power;
  • fuel consumption increase.

Causes of spark plugs failure

  • deposit on the core;
  • piston rings are worn-out;
  • pump of the cooling system is choked up or destroyed;
  • spark plug temperature is determined incorrectly;
  • continuous ignition;
  • the engine is overloaded;
  • malfunctions in system of water cooling.

Diagnostics

It is often sufficient to inspect the part visually to estimate spark plugs condition and find out the cause of failures.  For this purpose it is sufficient to check the colour of an insulator of a spark plug working tip. Gray or yellow-brown colour is indicative of correct operation of the component. Dry or damp black deposits point to:

  • excessively cold temperature range of the spark plug;
  • the extremely saturated mixture;
  • drop of vacuum;
  • late ignition point;
  • low compression;
  • the increased spark plug gap.

Repair and replacement of spark plugs

The spare part service life usually doesn't exceed 15 000 operational kilometers. Replacement of spark plugs should be performed in the following order:

  1. Disconnect high-voltage wires of ignition.
  2. Clean spark plugs off soiling with the help of air flow which is supplied by the compressor.
  3. Install new sparks with obligatory control of interelectrode distance (amount of gap is specified on the  site of manufacturer).
