Ignition Coil for auto

Ignition system auto parts: Ignition Coil

In any car that is equipped with an internal-combustion engine there is an ignition coil. We speak about an ignition-voltage transformer. Ignition coil is connected with an ignition lock, ignition distributor and breaker ignition system. When the ignition is on, in the ignition coil a magnetic field appears. If the breaker opens the circuit in the primary ignition coil, then there is a high-voltage pulse. After this the pulse is transmitted to the spark plugs. On the spark gap arises a spark that ignites the air-fuel mixture.

In modern cars there are several ignition coils, so each cylinder has its own coil. If there is a defect, one cylinder continues to operate and the car can drive. Many cars have only one ignition coil. If there is a defect, a complete replacement of the coil is needed. Theoretically, it is possible to replace the coil block, but there is no point. Ignition coil is not expensive.

As we speak about high voltage, let the specialists to replace the coil. Improper replacement has bad and irreversible impacts. Ignition coil has a cylindrical form and you can quickly find it. In any case do not remove the coil when the ignition is on. In our online store you will buy an original ignition coil. We have a great variety of spare car parts. Here you can buy clutch plate, windshield wiper, oil radiator, bumper, fuel level sensor, turbocharger, sidewall, tires and other spare car parts you need.

Ignition coil failures

  • the coil is damaged;
  • wear of the component;
  • ignition coils are overheated;
  • the boot of the coil is worn-out;
  • the ignition coil winding is broken off.

Signs of ignition coil failure

  • irregularity of the engine piston stroke rate, especially at high air moisture;
  • maximum power of a car is considerably reduced;
  • high rates of fuel consumption;
  • “Check Engine” indicator is lighted.

Causes of ignition coil failure

  • spark plugs of poor quality;
  • engine is overheated;
  • component is affected by increase of external temperature, dirt and dust;
  • broken isolation of the coil on reaching 35000V;
  • loosened fixations;
  • coils vibrations;
  • failure of the electric circuit mode.

Diagnostics

One needs special equipment to comprehensively identify all the malfunctions of the ignition coil. It is possible only to check external manifestations on your own. Traces of oxidation, dark spots or small gashes on the component case are indicatives of failure.

Even insignificant signs of malfunctions in the coil oblige the owner of the vehicle to check the component at the service station immediately. First of all, servicemen will check the resistance readings of the ignition coil windings (primary and secondary). A multimeter and an ohmmeter are used for this purpose. For a primary coil, normal figures are about 0,5–2 Ohm. Standard indicators of a secondary coil fluctuate in the range from 6000 to 15000 Ohm. Exact indicators of resistance are specified by the producer of the vehicle in technical documentation.

The coil should be replaced after 60000 – 80000 operational kilometers. It is desirable to carry out the diagnostics at least twice a year or every 30000 operational kilometers.

Repair and replacement of ignition coil

The ignition coil cannot be repaired. Oxygen entering the spare part housing will only worsen its work. Replacement is necessary even in case of slight detection of malfunctions.

Correct operation of the ignition coil depends on the proper wires connection. Replacement of the part occupies a short period of time, but demands assistance of qualified technicians.
