Many cars have only one ignition coil. If there is a defect, a complete replacement of the coil is needed. Theoretically, it is possible to replace the coil block, but there is no point. One needs special equipment to comprehensively identify all the malfunctions of the ignition coil. It is possible only to check external manifestations on your own. Traces of oxidation, dark spots or small gashes on the component case are indicatives of failure.
Even insignificant signs of malfunctions in the coil oblige the owner of the vehicle to check the component at the service station immediately. First of all, servicemen will check the resistance readings of the ignition coil windings (primary and secondary). A multimeter and an ohmmeter are used for this purpose. For a primary coil, normal figures are about 0,5–2 Ohm. Standard indicators of a secondary coil fluctuate in the range from 6000 to 15000 Ohm. Exact indicators of resistance are specified by the producer of the vehicle in technical documentation.
The coil should be replaced after 60000 – 80000 operational kilometers. It is desirable to carry out the diagnostics at least twice a year or every 30000 operational kilometers.
Repair and replacement of ignition coil
The ignition coil cannot be repaired. Oxygen entering the spare part housing will only worsen its work. Replacement is necessary even in case of slight detection of malfunctions.
Correct operation of the ignition coil depends on the proper wires connection. Replacement of the part occupies a short period of time, but demands assistance of qualified technicians.
