SsangYong cars are produced by the SsangYong Motor company founded in South Korea in 1954. Its staff numbers more than 4,000 specialists. The research and design centres, as well as production facilities are located in South Korea. The company is a recognized national leader in the production of high off-road performance vehicles. Nowadays the brand belongs to the Indian corporation Mahindra & Mahindra Limited.
Technical specifications of SsangYong cars
The brand’s 2-litre petrol and diesel motors with variable valve timing system and variable length intake manifold are popular among car enthusiasts. Both engines develop 149 hp. The maximum torque of the petrol one is 197 N·m, that of the diesel one – 360 N·m. The latter consumes 6.2 litres of fuel per 100 km in combined cycle. Today, these motors are installed, for example, on the Actyon crossover. More powerful SV220 turbocharged diesel engines have a 2.2 litre displacement and 178 hp output. The maximum torque is 400 N·m. The fourth generation Korando crossover and the Rexton Y400 SUV, which debuted in 2017, are equipped with these engines.
The Active AWD system is intended for driving on normal road surface and transfers all engine torque to the front axle. In the AWD mode, used in off-road conditions, 60% of torque is delivered to the rear axle, the rest part - to the front one. In the “Lock” mode, torque is distributed evenly. At speeds of up to 40 km/h, this ensures stability of the car on snowy or icy public roads. The Actyon, XLV, and Korando modern crossovers are equipped with this system. The Part-Time 4WD system has two operating modes: High – for slippery roads, and Low – for severe off-road conditions. Such a system allows to save fuel, and today it is installed on the Rexton SUV and the Actyon Sport crossover. Previously it was used on the Kyron models produced in 2007–2015.
The steering system can be adjusted. So, in the Sport mode the steering wheel requires more effort to turn, while the Comfort mode eases the maneuvering when parking or driving at low speed. Nowadays, the technology is used on the Trivoli and XLV crossovers.
Much attention is paid to safety. In 2019 the Korando crossover got the maximum possible 5 stars in Euro NCAP crash test. The car is equipped with the IACC smart adaptive cruise control which maintains a certain speed and safe distance to the vehicle ahead. Apart from this, the SsangYong Korando and Rexton are equipped with modern safety systems: front collision warning (FCW), emergency brake assist (AEBS), lane departure warning (LDWS), and lane keep assist (LKAS). The LCA (lane change assist), which warns about a vehicle approaching rapidly from behind, is also available. The DAA (driver attention alert) technology detects reduction of the driver’s attention and emits a warning signal, offering to take a break in driving. Apart from this, the Rexton SUV and the Musso pickup have the Advanced High Strength Steel (AHSS) ladder frame.
