Cam Gear / Timing Gear for auto

Engine auto parts: Cam Gear / Timing Gear

Toothed wheel is used to transmit torque to another toothed wheel directly or via timing belt or toothed rack. With the help of toothed rack torque becomes line. Toothed wheel teeth are evenly distributed on its surface. During the transmission of the torque, wheel teeth of the respective element get one into another – that is a form-locking pairing. Due to the differences in size of the toothed wheels, the gear ratio is determined.

In the vehicle different toothed wheels are used. In the transmission there are many toothed wheels in order to set different steps. Toothed wheel is also present in crankshaft and camshaft. Because of mechanical load the wheel can wear out. When a tooth breaks, this does not mean it will affect the whole operability. If there are many broken teeth, it is necessary to replace the wheel. Diagnostics and repair cost depends on toothed wheel functions and location. New toothed will is not expensive, so it is not worth to install a used wheel.

Since the toothed wheel is a part of a big system, car owner can replace it only if they have a good experience and know this system. Usually after installation, an adjustment is required which needs a certain level of experience. If you have any doubts, let specialists from a repair shop replace the toothed wheel. If you search for master brake cylinder, taillight, interior filter, catalytic converter, air conditioner compressor, crankshaft bearing shell, oxygen sensor, conditioner dryer or any other spare car part, you will definitely find it in our online shop of car parts.

How to detect malfunction of the crankshaft gear

First, inspect the surface of the component. If the visual inspection shows that the Timing Gear is cracked or has dents, it should be repaired. Also, check if the seats are damaged. To determine the degree of wear, use a gear tooth gauge. Using the drawing, determine the nominal tooth size, and measure the actual size; then compare the two values. The difference should not exceed 12%. If the wear is above this level, the component is to be restored.

You may notice that the crankshaft gear needs diagnostics by the following symptoms:

  • the vehicle has stopped abruptly;
  • lubricants are squeezed into surface pits;
  • pressure is unevenly distributed across the width of the toothed rim of the gear;
  • the gear has skewed;
  • contact pressure increased.

The reasons of the Timing Gear malfunction

The most common reason of component's normal wear is ingress of dirt and abrasive particles between the teeth. As a result, the surface of the gear abrades, thus changing the gear tooth module, and soon the component becomes unusable. Also abrasion may be caused by excessive load on the component.

In the working condition, the gear with the tensioned belt should fit tightly. A gap is an indicator of seat deformation.

Component serviceability is influenced by its quality. Components of poor quality not only wear out quickly, but may cause a more serious damage. For example, sharp ends of a poor quality component often damage the timing belt.

Repairing crankshaft gear

Repair may only temporarily remove the fault. Repair may be performed in different ways that will be determined by the nature and the extent of the malfunction. These include:

  1. Repairing cam gear by turning over. For this purpose, part of the component is cut, and a ring is welded to it on the opposite side. The latter should be installed in such a way that the load is passed to only unworn part of the teeth.
  2. Repairing Timing Gear by building up the worn teeth by welding, or installation of tooth inserts. Two copper templates are to be used to facilitate the task. They are held together by straps, and attached to the toothed rim. Buildup is performed with the use of heavy-coated electrodes. At the end, the templates are removed.
  3. Repair by adjustment. The cutting tool is moved and new teeth are cut.

Also, for removing faults, the ends of the components are grinded; in some cases, teeth are attached by welding or with screws.

Replacing the cam gear

On the average, the service life of the component is 150,000 km of mileage. If all teeth are significantly worn, a new gear is to be installed. The crankshaft gear should be replaced together with the camshaft gear. To do this, remove the cover, the filter, the pump and the belt, remove the pulleys. Next, unscrew the component with a special wrench, remove it, and install a new one. To install a serviceable component, perform these steps in the reverse order.
