Car Wheel bearing
Wheel bearing for car brands
Wheel bearings: useful information
Bearing serve to rotate the wheel on the hub with less resistance. They transmit the force applied to rotate the wheel on the axle. On the rear axle bearing modules are often used. When replacing the part, the module is entirely replaced. On the front axle there are installed angular contacts, conical roller, or radial bearings. It depends on the car model. To install and dismantle the wheel bearing a special tool is required. Therefore, it will be necessary to go to the car repair shop if the bearing is faulty.
In course of time wheel bearings wear out. As the bearing wears out, the noise level increases. Especially loud noise is when cornering. Increased noise level when cornering to the left indicates a faulty on the right side. Sometimes a play can appear because of wear. This problem can be diagnosed. When you turn the wheel press once on the brake and once turn the wheels without brake. If the play occurs in the last case, the problem is with the bearing.
If there is a faulty, you need to replace the bearing. To repair it you need a special press to press a new bearing in. Do not try to replace the bearing by yourself using a sledgehammer. A defective bearing must be timely replaced as it is dangerous to drive with a faulty bearing. In our Internet shop you will find any spare parts you need for your car: wheel brake cylinder, master cylinder, steering knuckles, brake shoes, window lifters, headlights, air dryer, fuel and oil filters.
How to detect malfunctions of the wheel hub bearing kit
Check the condition of the bearing when brake pads are replaced, regardless of the vehicle mileage. The state of this component may be checked in several ways. At a speed of 10 - 15 km/h, make a sharp left turn. If the extraneous noise is not heard anymore, it indicates a fault in the bearing of the left wheel. Then check the right wheel the same way. More thorough diagnostics requires special equipment.
You will need a lift or a jack. Lift the vehicle, start the engine, switch to the fourth gear, and increase the speed up to 80 km/h. Next, engage the clutch and disengage the gear, carefully listening to the sound the source of which will be located in one of the wheels. You may try another method. Swing the wheel on the suspended vehicle first vertically, and then horizontally. Presence of even small free play is an indication of malfunction in the bearing, or in the steering system. Next, you will have to simultaneously press the brake pedal, and swing the wheel vertically (you will need an assistant). If the free play disappears, the component is to be replaced.
You may notice that the Wheel bearings needs diagnostics by the following symptoms:
- knocking and increased vibration during movement;
- vehicle straying from the straight path;
- the body inclines during braking or in sharp turns;
- extraneous noises;
- wheel rims get overheated;
- tires wear out unevenly.
The reasons of wheel hub bearing kit malfunctions
The main reason of the wheel hub bearing fault is driving on poor quality roads: the component is exposed to high loads, and cracks and chips may appear on it.
The wheel hub bearing has a rather long service life. Its premature wear may be caused by using inappropriate lubricants, or excess or lack of the lubricant. Besides, the service life of the component may be shortened due to ingress of dirt, abrasive particles, and water. It can also be affected by poor quality of the part and inappropriate installation. Incorrectly adjusted clearance may be the reason of component displacement, and, as a consequence, its damage. Improperly balanced wheels can also cause loss of the bearing operability.
Replacing the Hub bearing
The wheel hub bearing should be replaced after every 130-190 thousand kilometers of mileage. Please note the following recommendations:
- observe the clearance when the tapered bearing is installed;
- during replacement, do not use sharp objects, as they may damage the component.
- when installing the component on the axle, use a mandrel for applying force to the inner ring;
- when pressing the bearing in, use a mandrel to apply pressure to the outer ring.
