How to detect the inlet manifold gasket failure
Inspection of the gasket serviceability is possible in the following way: with the shutdown engine, feed some amount of smoke through the air filter connecting pipe and create excessive pressure, using the pump. If the part is not tight, smoke will blow out from the leaking place. Besides, you have to visually inspect the part. For instance, sometimes the gasket burns out, and this can be detected at visual inspection.
You can identify that the inlet manifold gasket requires to be examined by the following symptoms:
- while the engine is running, you hear a specific whistle/sound of air suction;
- the engine cannot reach full power;
- unstable engine operation at idle;
- leakage of engine oil and/or coolant;
- the controller signals the "lean mixture" error.
Causes of the inlet manifold gasket failure
A common cause of the part failure is its natural wear and tear. A poor quality component will lose its performance properties faster.
The power unit vibration shortens the part service life. Besides, premature wear can be caused by engine overheating and sharp temperature changes. All this results in the fact that the component loses its sealing properties.
Replacement of the inlet manifold gasket
If the part has failed, it cannot be repaired. It is advisable to carry out replacement at a service station, but with experience in servicing vehicles you can do it on your own. General recommendations are as follows:
- Lower the pressure in the engine fuel system.
- Disconnect the wire from the negative terminal on the battery.
- Remove the securing clip.
- Disconnect the crankcase ventilation hose from the air supply hose connector.
- Disconnect the air supply hose from the throttle body neck.
- Remove the harness connector from the idle speed controller, then unscrew the fasteners of the engine cover.
- Disconnect the fuel supply pipe from the fuel frame connector.
- Dismantle the fuel rail to which the intake manifold is attached.
- Remove the vacuum brake booster hose and the ventilation hose.
- Disconnect the throttle body cable from the bracket.
- Unscrew the fasteners connecting the intake manifold to the bracket and to the cylinder head.
- Remove the old inlet manifold gasket, thoroughly clean the mounting spot and install a new part.
- Reassemble in reverse order.
