Turn indicator relay interrupter is the component part of the turn indicator system. It provides turn indicators’ lamp blinking with a defined frequency. Turn indicator relay interrupter consists of a switch and a pulse generator. And there is possibility of work in two modes: in mode of fault signalling and in mode of turn indicating. There are used the following types of turn indicator interrupters: thermal, bimetallic, digital and electronic. In new cars often there is no necessity in a separate turn indicator interrupter, because its function is performed by a control block.

Turn indicator interrupter is designed in such a way that it is possible to warn about turn indicator lamps’ faultiness. If the lamp is faulty, then a minor current flows and the frequency of blinking doubles. If the turn indicators do not switch off, then the turn indicator relay interrupter is broken down. For the same reason lamps of turn indicators may not light up. In this case one more reason may be burned-out protecting device. The situation when all the lamps fuse at the same time is also possible. If a wrong lamp is fixed, then the frequency of blinking will differ from the usual one. Lamps and turn indicator relay interrupter must correspond to the car model. Otherwise there is no guarantee that they will function in the right way. Malfunctions of turn signal relay

• relay armature of the lamp contact block has deformed;
• wiring is worn out;
• fuse burnt;
• nichrome wire got broken;
• rust appeared on the part metal body;
• eyelets or bolt holes are worn out;
• nichrome wire got slackened.

Signs of turn signal relay malfunctions

• a turn indicator does not click characteristically while working;
• indicators lamps often burn out;
• turn indicator signal is activated with delay;
• lamps are blinking more often/seldom;
• turn indicator lamps are switched on continuously;
• signal light on dashboard has stopped working;
• the part has started to consume more electricity.

Causes of turn signal relay malfunction

• usage of low-quality parts;
• humidity inside the component;
• voltage changes;
• component elements are soiled;
• the part is worn out.

Diagnostics of turn signal relay

It is necessary to check the part immediately in case if any malfunctions signs appeared. If relay is situated out of the fuse and relay box, close its contacts by using a metal object, for example, a screwdriver. If “turn signals” work after that, than the relay got broken. When the part is situated inside the  fuse and relay box, first take its cover off, take the relay out, and then close the corresponding contacts using wire.

Replacement of turn signal relay

Repair cannot correct the part trouble. If damages of turn signal relayappear, it must be replaced. For this, following actions must be performed:

1. demount the dashboard;
2. unscrew the holding nut of the replaced part;
3. take off two cables from the relay pin;
4. demount the relay and disconnect the connector blocks from it;
5. place a new part by doing the same steps in the reversed order.
