Main modifications
35 modifications of Volkswagen Transporter IV minibuses were produced during manufacturing years: 14 petrol and 14 diesel ones before restyling, 6 diesel and 1 petrol ones after it. Moreover, the line of available modifications included not only front wheel drive but also all-wheel drive cars. 2.5 TDI Syncro MT is one of them. 5-cylinder 10-valve engine with direct fuel injection and turbocharging, which develops power of 102 hp, was installed on it.
Maximum torque of 250 N∙m was achieved at medium rpm – about 1900 rpm with 3500 maximum possible. Due to this the car was not notable for great dynamics: it reaches 100 km/h in 18.1 seconds, and its maximum speed didn’t exceed 157 km/h. But fuel consumption made this modification one of the most efficient among all offered ones (9.7 liters per 100 km in the city, 7.7 liters in combined cycle, and 6.6 liters on the highway). A large fuel tank of 80 liters volume allowed to cover a distance from 820 to 1210 km after only one filling, that is why the bus perfectly suited long trips.
Configurations of IV 70XB, 70XC, 7DB, 7DW
Basic configuration included minimum options. But unquestionable advantage of all minibuses was a spacious cabin and comfortable seats.
Transporter 70XB, 70XC, 7DB, 7DW (1990–2003) minivans could be equipped with Climatronic air-conditioner with the system of separate air temperature adjustment in the front and rear cabin parts, hydraulic power steering, power windows, electric driven sunroof. Heating of the rear window prevented it from icing and provided great observability at reverse driving during cold seasons. Safety belts and headrests were presupposed for all passengers, and incline of seat backs could be adjusted.
