Volvo 850 LS cars are five-seat sedans produced by the Swedish company from 1991 to 1997. They were developed as part of the project called Galaxy, which aimed at creating a new brand model range. Production of the sedan allowed to realize four world-class innovations at once: automatic height-adjusting seat belts (ARH), system of side impact safety SIPS, steering up suspension Delta Link and transverse 5-cylinder engine with transmission of driving torque to the front wheels. Technical characteristics of Volvo 850 LS
Volvo 850 LS sedan length was 4660 mm, width – 1760 mm, and height – 1400 mm. The car had the large luggage compartment, volume of which was 416 liters. If the rear seats were folded, it could be 941 liters. Car length and height increased by 10 mm after restyling in 1994, due to this the cabin became more spacious. Road clearance was 110 mm.
Main modifications
25 modifications of Volvo 850 LS (1991–1997) sedan were produced during 6 manufacturing years: 23 petrol and 2 diesel ones. Т5-R 2.3i Turbo 20V modification was one of the most powerful. Its 5-cylinder 20-valve engine together with the high-pressure turbine and system of multipoint fuel injection developed power of 240 hp. Maximum driving torque of 330 N⋅m was reached at about 3000 rpm. Due to this the car could accelerate to 245 km/h speed, and it was limited by electronics, while its acceleration to 100 km/h took 6.9 seconds. Carrying capacity of the sedan of this modification was 469 kg.
This car differed from the rest Volvo 850 LS not only by technical characteristics but also by appearance. Its body could be painted in yellow, dark-green or black colour, recognizable feature was a spoiler with protruding lower part. Standard equipment included 17-inch 5-spoke wheel discs made of titanium, Pirelli P-Zero tyres with great side adherence, and four airbags – for the first time in the world.
Configurations of 850 LS
There were offered 7 main configurations for sedans: basic, GLE, GLT, and then Exclusive-Line, Sports-Line, Comfort-Line and Luxury-Line.
Cars of Luxury-Line configuration were equipped with three or four airbags, anti-lock braking system, traction control system, on-board computer, cruise control and climate control, and height-adjustable seats with lumbar support of high level. For comfort of all passengers central armrests were presupposed in the cabin. The steering column could be adjusted for height and reach. Leather seat upholstery could be ordered for additional charge. The leather covered steering wheel was included into basic equipment.
