Technical characteristics of Volvo 850 LW
Volvo 850 LW station wagon differs by a spacious cabin where 5 people could seat with comfort, and a large luggage compartment with volume of 792 – 1580 liters according to configuration of the rear seats. Car length was 4710 mm, width – 1760 mm, and height – 1430 mm. A small road clearance of 110 mm provided stability on the road during driving at high speed and promoted better handling. All station wagon modifications had ventilated brake discs on the front axle, and non-ventilated brake discs – on the rear axle.
Main modifications
26 modifications of Volvo 850 LW station wagon were produced since 1992 to 1997: 8 petrol ones before restyling of 1994 and 16 petrol, 2 diesel ones after it. Most of them had front drive. There also was all-wheel drive modification 2.5 T MT AWD.
5-cylinder 20-valve engine with the low-pressure turbine which was developed especially for brand all-wheel drive cars was installed on this modification. Due to presence of turbocharger, maximum torque of 270 N∙m could be reached in a wide engine rotation speed range – from 1500 to 5100 rpm. Thanks to this the car demonstrated great dynamics both at low and high speed. It accelerated to 100 km/h in 8.5 seconds and developed maximum speed of 220 km/h. Fuel consumption per 100 km was 8.8 liters on the highway, 11.2 liters in combined cycle, and 15.3 liters in the city. AWD system with the visco-clutch distributed torque between axles according to the road situation, providing stability and good off-road performance of the station wagon during driving on snow-covered roads.
Configurations of 850 LW
The car was produced in three configurations – basic, GLE and GLT. Basic equipment could vary according to modification. For example, station wagons with 2.0i engine included the following in their equipment list: anti-lock braking system, driver airbag, front power windows, power steering, heated power mirrors, tinted windows and fog lights. There were offered additional options: an airbag for the front passenger, rear power windows, sunroof, cruise control, heated seats, air-conditioner and 16-inch light alloy wheels.
