Technical specifications of Peugeot 406 (8E/F)
The length, width and height of the cars were 4,725 mm, 1,765 mm and 1,396 mm correspondingly. The road clearance was 130 mm. Depending on the rear seats position, the volume of the luggage compartment could be 525–1,740 litres.
Independent front and rear suspensions ensured excellent steerability of the vehicle. The rear axle with a passive steering effect made cornering as easy as possible. At the same time, the car perfectly maintained stability when maneuvering due to the front and rear stabilizer.
Ventilated brake discs were installed on the front axle of the estate car. Depending on the version, the rear axle could be equipped with discs or drums.
Main versions
More than 20 versions of Peugeot 406 (1996‒2004) estate cars have been produced over the whole manufacturing period. All of them were front-wheel driven.
The 2.0-16V HPI petrol version demonstrated well-balanced characteristics. A 4-cylinder 16-valve motor with the direct fuel injection system was installed on it. It developed 143 hp and 192 Nm of torque. The estate accelerated to 100 km/h in 10 seconds, and its top speed was 205 km/h. At the same time, fuel consumption was moderate: 7.7 litres in combined cycle, 6.2 litres – in extra-urban, and 10.4 litres – in urban cycle. The loading capacity of the car was 675 kg.
Trim levels of 406 (8E/F)
Peugeot 406 estate cars were available in the following trim levels: ST, SL, SV, SVE, SR, XT, XR, GT, XS, Familiale and others.
The cars of SR trim level were standardly equipped with front, side and curtain airbags, anti-lock braking system with electronic brake force distribution, brake assist, and trip computer. The steering column was adjustable in two directions, the seats – by height. Intensity of the dashboard backlight could also be adjusted to ensure good readability of the instrument panel info. The windscreen wipers were switched on and off by rain sensor signal. An air conditioner, audio system, voice input function and other options were offered for an extra charge.
