PEUGEOT 406 Saloon cars: technical specifications, versions and trim levels

Technical specifications of Peugeot 406 (8B)
Peugeot 406 saloons were 4,555 mm long, 1,764 mm wide and 1,396 mm high. The car body dimensions slightly changed after the restyling in 1999: its length and height reached 4,598 mm and 1,412 mm correspondingly. The luggage compartment volume was 430 litres. Depending on the version, the road clearance could be 119–125 mm.
Ventilated brake discs were installed on the vehicle’s front axle. Non-ventilated discs or drums – on the rear axle. The front suspension was independent, of MacPherson-type, the rear – independent multilink one. The latter had a passive steering effect, which ensured excellent steerability of the car.
The passenger compartment was cozy and comfortable. Leather, wood and soft plastics were used in interior trimming.
Main versions
More than 20 versions of Peugeot 406 (8B) have been produced over the whole manufacturing period. All of them were front-wheel driven. They could be equipped with a 5-speed manual or 4-speed automatic transmission.
The 2.0 HDI 110 diesel version had optimal characteristics. A 4-cylinder 8-valve turbocharged motor with intercooler was installed on it. Its torque was 250 Nm. It was reached at 1,750 rpm, which guaranteed good traction performance both at low and high speed. Acceleration to 100 km/h took 12.6 seconds, and the top speed was 188 km/h. The Common Rail fuel injection system ensured optimal fuel consumption. For 100 km of travel, the saloon consumed 5.1 litres of fuel in extra-urban cycle, 6.5 litres – in combined cycle, and 8.9 litres – in urban cycle. The loading capacity was 565 kg.
The 4-speed manual transmission designed by PSA in cooperation with Renault was installed on this version. It was adaptive, and ensured the maximum driving comfort.
Trim levels of 406 (8B)
Numerous trim levels were offered for Peugeot 406 saloons: GT, XT, XS, XR, SR, SV, ST, SRX, SVE, Gentry, Executive and others. There were also special packages, such as Sport and Comfort.
The equipment was rich even in inexpensive trim levels. The Executive car (one of the best trims) pleased with leather-upholstered and electrically-adjustable seats with heating and position memory function, satellite navigation system, audio system with 10 speakers, and other features.
