BMW 7 (E38) cars: technical specifications, versions and trim levels
BMW 7 series (E38) vehicles are luxury saloons which were produced between 1994 and 2001. A great number of innovations were implemented in these cars. In particular, they were the first ones in Europe to be equipped with satellite navigation system and tubular head side airbags. These were also the first cars of the German brand to be fitted with a TV. Overall, there 340,242 cars were manufactured during the production years. Technical specifications of BMW 7 series (E38)
The length of the car with a short wheelbase was 4,984 mm, its width was 1,862 mm and height was 1,435 mm. The luggage compartment capacity was 500 l. The ride height reached 119 mm. Saloons with a long wheelbase (LWB) had different dimensions. Their height, width and length were 5124 mm, 1862 mm and 1425 mm, respectively. The length of the L7 version, 899 examples of which were produced, was extended to 5,374 mm.
Main versions
During the production years, there were 34 versions of the BMW 7 series (E38) made: 18 petrol, 2 diesel ones before the 1998 facelift; 10 petrol and 4 diesel ones after.
One of the most interesting versions was the petrol L7 AT (326 hp). It was fitted with a 12-cylinder 24-valve engine with the torque of 490 N⋅m and maximum 5,000 RPM. The car accelerated to 100 km/h in 7 seconds and its maximum speed was 250 km/h.
It was an armoured vehicle with the highest level of safety - B6/7. The weight of the car increased by 950 kg because of additional equipment installed. The fuel consumption increased up to 22.1 l per 100 km in an urban area, 15.2 l in a mixed cycle and 11.3 l on a highway. The payload capacity of the version was 400 kg and the capacity of the luggage compartment decreased up to 460 l.
Around the windscreen, there was a cord which was to be pulled out in case of an accident in order to get out of the car. Besides, the saloon was fitted with a toxic gas detection system, which automatically closed all windows and air vents in case of danger.
Trim packages of the 7 series (E38)
The cars were offered with three trim levels – base, Executive and High-Line. Cars from Protection Line and Security line had their own range of equipment. Customers could choose various option packages.
Regardless of the equipment, cars were characterised by a high level of comfort, safety and a large number of innovations. The standard equipment included a multifunctional steering wheel with buttons that controlled sound system, a navigation system, the display which was used to watch TV, cruise and climate controls, adaptive headlights and also active seats with hydraulic cushions which provided excellent side support while manoeuvring at a high speed.
