Main versions
7 versions of Subaru Forester I (1997–2002) were produced during the years of manufacture. All of them were equipped with petrol engines. They could have 5-speed manual or 4-speed automatic transmissions. All the versions had full-time all-wheel drive.
2.0 S-Turbo AWD version was one of the most powerful and dynamic. It was equipped with 4-cylinder 16-valve engine with multi-point fuel injection, turbocharger and intercooler. Engine output reached 125 hp. Maximum torque was 240 N⋅m. The crossover accelerated to 100 km/h in 9.3 seconds, and its top speed was 189 km/h. Average fuel consumption was 14 litres in the urban cycle, 10.5 litres – in the combined cycle and 8.5 litres – in the extra-urban cycle.
All-wheel drive system was based on an electronically controlled multi-plate clutch, which distributed the engine torque between the axles in the ratio appropriate for the road situation. For instance, up to 60% of engine torque was distributed to the front axle and 40% – to the rear one. If necessary, this ratio changed to 50/50. And in some cases, up to 90% of engine torque could be distributed to the front wheels.
