Technical characteristics of Renault Espace III (JE0_)
The minivans with short wheelbase were 4,517 mm long, 1,810 mm wide and 1,690 mm high. Road clearance was 110 mm. The luggage compartment capacity varied from 275 to 2,850 litres. Depending on the trim level, the car was a 5-, 6- or 7-seater. Grand versions differed from the others by length. It reached 4,787 mm. Also, they had a bigger luggage compartment with a capacity of 520–3,100 litres depending on the rear seat configuration.
Like those of the predecessor, the body panels were made of fibreglass which guaranteed excellent resistance to corrosion. The rear semi-independent suspension was simple and reliable. The braking system featured vented discs on the front axle and drums on the rear one, but more powerful versions had brake discs on all four wheels.

17 versions of Renault Espace III (JE) were produced over time: 9 short-wheelbase and 8 long-wheelbase ones. All of them were front-wheel-drive.
The diesel version 2.2 dCi was the example combination of fuel-efficiency and dynamics. It had a 4-cylinder 16-valve turbocharged engine with an intercooler and Common Rail fuel injection system. It outputted 130 hp and its torque reached 290 N⋅m. 0 to 100 km/h acceleration took 12.4 seconds. The top speed of this vehicle reached 183 km/h. Fuel consumption didn’t exceed 6.1 litres in the extra-urban cycle, 7.1 litres – in the combined cycle and 8.8 litres – in the urban cycle. The maximum loading capacity was 873 kg.
Trim levels of Espace III (JE)
Depending on the target market and production year, Espace III (JE) minivans were available in the following trim levels: Base, RTE, Cyclade, RXE, Fidji, RXT, Initiale, Authentique, Expression, Privilège, Etoile, Elysee.
With the Privilège trim level, one of the richest, the car was equipped with fog lights, front and rear power windows, athermic windscreen, separate rear seats, anti-lock braking system, six airbags, CD-player with a 6-disc changer, 16-inch light alloy wheels. Moreover, the seats were trimmed with leather and 2 sunroofs were installed in the vehicle.
