The length of the vehicle BMW 5 series saloon (the E60) was 4,841 mm, its width was 1,846 and the height was 1,468 mm. The capacity of the luggage compartment was 520 l. The ride height was 142 mm. After the facelift of 2007, the length of some versions increased up to 4,854 mm with the height up to 1,482 mm.

One of the most interesting versions is the petrol 535i xDrive AT (305 hp) with the direct fuel injection and twin turbocharger. The maximum torque of 407 Н⋅м was achieved at the wide range of revolutions – from 1,400 to 5,000 per minute. Due to that, you could feel the power of the engine driving both at low and high speeds. The sedan accelerated from 0-100 km/h in 5.8 seconds and its maximum speed was 241 km/h. The fuel consumption was relatively low for such powerful car: it took 9.4 l of petrol to cover the distance of 100 km on a highway, 11.8 l – in the mixed cycle and 13.8 l – driving in an urban area. The car was equipped with the xDrive full-time all-wheel drive of the fourth generation. The torque was distributed between the axles in the ratio of 40:60, however, up to 100% of the engine power could be transferred to one axle only if it is needed. Thanks to that, manoeuvrability of the vehicle, its dynamic characteristics and steering response became much better.

The BMW 5 series saloons (the E60) were available in three main configurations: basic, Executive and High Executive. The Business Line package was also marketed in a number of countries.

The High Executive trim of the saloon offered numerous electronic systems. One of the most attractive options was a projection display which showed the information about the speed, selected route and other important data that the driver could read without being distracted from the road.
