A tyre pressure gauge helps drivers monitor tyre pressure, which is important for road safety, fuel economy, and the reduction of tread wear.
Tyre pressure gauge: 9 key facts
- The simplest, cheapest, and most reliable ones are analogue devices. They consist of a housing, dial, and a curved, hollow lever (Bourdon tube). One end is sealed and connected via a rod to the gears, which actuate the pointer. The other end is attached to the tyre valve. When the tube is filled with compressed air, it straightens out, moving the pointer to the corresponding angle. The drawback of these devices is their relatively poor accuracy. Furthermore, it is often difficult to read the measurements because of the vibrating pointer.
- Digital tyre pressure gauges provide the most accurate results. Their design includes a pressure sensor which sends a corresponding electrical signal to the built-in microchip. It processes the data and displays the readings on the LCD screen. The disadvantages of these devices include a high price and the need for replacing batteries.
- Analogue devices contain a lot of metal parts and are susceptible to moisture. Therefore, they have to be kept in a dry, well-ventilated environment. Digital instruments must not be left out in the cold, as this can quickly drain their batteries.
- Some models are fitted with a rubberised housing. The anti-slip surface prevents the tool from slipping out accidentally and also serves as a dampener if it does fall.
- Most tyre pressure gauges are fitted with a pressure relief valve which allows for deflating the tyres if necessary.
- Other additional handy options include a built-in flashlight, a knife to cut seat belts in the case of a car accident, and a safety hammer to break the windows if the doors are blocked.
- You should visit a special service station to have your instrument calibrated once a year.
- It is recommended to check the tyre pressure once a week and before longer trips. Excessive pressure leads to uneven tread wear, increases the load exerted to the suspension, and makes driving less comfortable. This can result in poor steerability, reduced fuel efficiency, and an increased risk of punctures, overheating, and the tyre coming off the rim.
- Measurements should be taken when tyres have cooled after a drive of at least 3 hours. If this is not possible, reduce the resulting readings by 10%.
