MAZDA RX-8 (SE, FE) cars: technical specifications, versions and trim levels
Mazda RX-8 (SE17) cars are 4-seat coupes produced in Japan from 2003 till 2012. They were facelifted in 2008. These cars were known for their unusual design. For example, their compact rear doors had no outer handles and could be opened only from the inside together with the front ones. The car received more than 30 international awards. For instance, in 2004, it won the “Best Sports Car” title in the USA and the “Best Car” award – in Great Britain from the world-renowned journalists. Technical characteristics of Mazda RX-8 (SE17)
Body width was 1770 mm, length – 4427 mm, height – 1340 mm. The loading capacity equalled 447 kg. The luggage compartment didn’t exceed 215 litres. After the facelift, the length became 4470 mm, other parameters didn’t change. Vented brake discs were mounted on both vehicle axles.
Main versions
The company released more than 10 versions in total. All of them were equipped with Wankel rotary engines operating on petrol. The cars had rear-wheel drive.
1.3 MT PZ version, developed for the UK market in collaboration with British engineering group Prodrive, deserves special attention. The British specialists updated the suspension and exhaust system. Particularly, they made the suspension 60% stiffer compared to the same system of other Mazda RX-8 (2003–2012) cars. Road clearance was reduced by 15 mm. Two exhaust pipes had oval tips with the engineering group logo.
A total of 800 units of the 1.3 MT PZ version was released in 2006. It had a 280 hp engine. Max torque of this power unit equalled 211 N·m and was reached at 8200 rpm. The vehicle accelerated to 100 km/h in 6.5 seconds, and its top speed reached 252 km/h.
Trim levels of RX-8 (SE17)
The most popular trim levels were Basis, Challenge, Energy, Sport and Revolution C. With the Basis trim, the car had a rear fog light, electrically-adjustable heated side mirrors, and heated rear window. The passenger compartment was provided with power windows and leather-trimmed reach-adjustable steering wheel. Front and side airbags were installed as well as ABS with brake force distribution (EBD), traction control system (TCS) and dynamic stability control (DSC). Also, the car had an air conditioner and a sound system with CD-player.
Apart from other features, the extended trim, Revolution C, included xenon headlights with a washer, sunroof, light sensor. The interior was trimmed with leather and the front seats were heated. Moreover, the car had cruise control and an infotainment system with DVD and navigation.
