The length of the estate car was 4,478 mm, its width was 1,739 mm and the height was 1,409 mm. The capacity of the luggage compartment could vary in the range between 435 and 1,345 l depending on the position of rear seats. The ride height was 130 mm.
Main versions
During the time of production, there were 59 versions of the BMW 3 series (the E46/3 Touring) estate car made: 20 petrol, 6 diesel before the facelift of 2001; 20 petrol, 13 diesel after it.
One of the fastest versions was the petrol 325i MT (192 hp). The number of revolutions produced by its 6-cylinder engine might be 6,000 per minute and its maximum speed was 237 km/h. It took the car 7.5 seconds to accelerate to 100 km/h. The fuel consumption did not exceed 12.9 l per 100 km when driving in an urban area, 9.2 l in the mixed cycle and 7.1 driving on highways. The carrying capacity of the version reached 540 kg.
The multi-point fuel injection system provided stable engine performance, improved fuel economy. 5-speed manual transmission allowed the driver, on the assumption of road conditions, to choose the most appropriate driving mode. The front and rear independent suspensions ensured comfort while driving and ventilated brake discs on both axles improved braking efficiency.
The trim packages of the 3 series (the E46/3 Touring)
Several trims were offered for the BMW 3 series estate cars (1999–2005): basic, Executive, Essence. The limited edition Black & Silverline was characterised by its own list of equipment.
The standard range of the equipment depended on the version. At the plant, the car was usually equipped with a large number of active safety systems, front and side airbags, active headrests on the front seats and ISOFIX child seat fittings were available as an extra options. The onboard computer, heated power mirrors, rear window wiper and halogen headlights were also on the list of standard equipment for the most estate cars. For an extra charge, it was possible to order a dual-zone climate control instead of standard air conditioning, heated electrically adjustable front seats, electric sunroof, a navigation system, CD-Changer and 18-inch alloy discs.
