Main modifications
Before restyling in 2000, 32 modifications of Audi A3 8L1 were released: 11 gasoline, and 8 diesel ones in the three-door body, and 9 gasoline and 4 diesel ones in the five-door body. After restyling, 25 gasoline and 17 diesel modifications were available for three-door hatchbacks, and the same number for five-door hatchbacks.
The diesel 1.9 TDI Tiptronic was powerful, dynamic and yet economical. The 130-horsepower diesel engine with intercooler and turbocharging could rotate with the speed up to 4,000 RPM, and its maximum torque was 310 N•m. Acceleration to 100 km/h took only 9.8 seconds, and the speed could grow up to 200 km/h. The distance of 100 km required 9 liters of fuel when driving in the city, 6.5 l in combined cycle, and 5 l in the highway. The payload of the modification was 560 kg.
The semi-automatic transmission ensured smooth gear shift, and manual mode ensured excellent steerability on dirt roads or roads with poor quality surface.
Configurations of A3 8L1
Audi A3 8L1 hatchbacks were produced in several equipment packages: Attraction, Ambition, Ambiente, and S-line. In the Ambition configuration, the vehicle was equipped with anti-lock braking system with brake effort distributor, a stabilization system, a differential lock, front and side airbags, and cruise control. The height of front seats could be adjusted, and the seats could have heating and leather upholstery. The three-spoke steering wheel was covered with leather, and was adjustable by height and reach.
Vehicles in this configuration had on-board computer, windscreen wipers with adjustable pause, alloy wheels and fog lights installed at the factory. Additional options included parking sensors, an audio system, a central armrest, xenon headlights and the headlight washer system. The suspension lowered by 16 mm enhanced steerability.
