Jump leads are used to crank an engine using another car’s battery. They are used when your own car battery is dead. They consist of a pair of insulated stranded cables with alligator clips on both ends.
Jump leads: 9 key facts
- The thicker the conducting core is, the higher the engine capacity can be. It is recommended to use leads with a cross-sectional area of at least 6 mm2 for 1.6 L engines and 12 mm2 for larger ones.
- To avoid mixing up the polarity, one cable in the set is usually red, the other is black. The red one is used to connect positive terminals of both batteries and the black one is used for negative terminals.
- The insulation sheath is usually made of polymeric materials, rubber, or silicone. Silicon versions usually have higher wear-resistance, aren’t prone to cracking, and can withstand low and high temperatures.
- For passenger cars, the most appropriate cable length is between 2.5 m and 4 m. Any shorter and they won’t be able to connect vehicles parked at some distance from each other. If they are too long they may touch off other parts, which could interfere with the connection. Besides, longer cables have higher resistance.
- The most efficient and reliable are cables with copper cores. They have low resistance and a higher current rating. Cables made from copper-plated aluminium are cheaper but less durable.
- To avoid power losses, in high-quality parts connectors called alligator clips are welded to the conducting core.
- Vehicles with different electrical system voltages must not be connected.
- To reduce the risk of injuries and short circuits, it is recommended to use accessories with insulated clips.
- When the cables are attached, both vehicles must be switched off. It is also recommended to remove the keys from the ignition switches.
