Usually winter tyres for motorcycles are used on vehicles that participate in competitions on ice-covered roads or race tracks. Such products are rarely installed on motorcycles used for public roads.

Requirements for winter motorcycle tyres

Winter tyres for motorcycles are produced of a soft rubber compound, which remains elastic at subzero temperatures. This ensures a reliable road grip on dry, wet, or ice-covered surfaces.

Large distance between the blocks promotes their self-cleaning. Sipes of the central part of the tread evenly reduce the pressure in the components, thus increasing driving safety.
• Studded. They are designed for driving on ice-covered highways. They also can be used on soft ground and powder snow. They are not suitable for iced mud and paved roads. The studs can be of different shapes and length.

What should one consider when choosing tyres?

• The tread pattern of winter tyres for motorcycles should correspond to their operating conditions. The parts for driving on paved roads are produced of a stiffer rubber compound. They are characterised by good wear resistance, ensure short braking path and stability on hard surfaces. They are not suitable for driving on ice. Also, studded winter tyres for motorcycles should not be used on paved roads: their rubber compound is too soft and wears fast, and the studs can break. You can lose control of your vehicle due to this.
• The motorcycle tyre carcass construction should correspond to technical characteristics of your vehicle. For instance, diagonal components are mostly installed on heavy vehicles, such as cruisers and touring motorcycles. This kind of parts have a round cross-section and high sidewalls. They withstand high loads perfectly. Sportbikes are usually equipped with radial components. These ones have a low profile, are less sensitive to overheating. However, their sidewalls can deform under heavy load.
• Buy components of the same sizes as the standard ones. If this recommendation is not followed, vehicle handling may deteriorate.
• Take into account that the front and rear motorcycle wheels differ in size.
