Vacuum Pump for auto

Brakes auto parts: Vacuum Pump

How to detect the brake booster vacuum pump failure

You can perform initial examination on your own. As a first step, you have to check if the part is depressurized. Perform a thorough visual inspection of the component surface. Oil traces, cracks, and other mechanical damage are indicative of a failure. Make sure that the pump housing is reliably closed with a cover.

For further examination you have to remove the dashboard, and then disconnect the pump hose from the booster. Then start the engine and warm it up. Close the hose end with your finger. If the pump is operating correctly, you should feel suction. If there is no suction, you have to repair or replace the component.

More comprehensive diagnosis can be carried out only by professionals of a service station with the help of a vacuum gauge.

You may identify that the brake booster vacuum pump needs to be checked by the following symptoms:

  • when the engine is warming up or operating at low speeds, metallic knocking is heard;
  • when the engine is insufficiently warmed up, the brake pedal strongly resists being pressed;
  • the parking brake light is activated on the instrument panel;
  • engine power has decreased;
  • the number of rpms at idle has decreased;
  • exhaust gas has become black.

Causes of the brake booster vacuum pump failure

The most frequent part malfunction cause is lack of oil or its insufficient level. This entails a fast wear of the pump and, consequently, an insufficient vacuum level in the system. Depressurization can result from the gasket wear as well.

Usage of poor quality oil can also lead to malfunction, as it can cause blocking of the oil inlet hole.

Repair and replacement of the brake vacuum pump

If there is a minor damage, you can buy a repair kit and repair the pump on your own. Before doing this, it is worth calculating its cost. In case its price is not much different from that of a new part, the pump replacement is more practical.

In some vehicle models, the brake vacuum pump is connected to the alternator. In such a case, its restoration works should be entrusted to professionals of a service station.

Installing a new part on your own is quite difficult due to a hindered access to it. Besides, the engine may fail due to the part incorrect mounting. That is why it is best to perform the component replacement at a service station.
