Timing Chain Tensioner for auto

Engine auto parts: Timing Chain Tensioner

How to detect the timing chain tensioner failure

If you inspect the mechanical tensioner on your own, just demount the timing chain  protective cover and press the guide against the tensioner by hand. If the tensioner plunger is recessed into its housing, the part is defective. On some cars, a slight retraction of the tensioner rod is acceptable, but only if the pressure in the engine lubrication system has not yet reached the working level.

Hydraulic tensioners when pressed should curve concavely with resistance to 2-3 mm, and then return to the initial position.

You may identify that the timing chain tensioner has to be diagnosed by the following symptoms:

  • chain sagging;
  • metal rattling from the engine compartment while the engine is running;
  • knocks in the engine area when it is started after a long stand;
  • chain slipping.

Causes of the timing chain tensioner failure

The mechanical timing chain tensioners mostly break due to natural wear and tear. Eventually the springs tension decreases, the rod wears out and the clamps fail. Due to this, the part can no longer provide the required drive chain tension.

Rubber gaskets are typically worn out in hydraulic tensioners. As a consequence when the engine is heated, the required pressure is not provided inside the part. Premature failure of the sealants can result from usage of substandard oil.

Neglecting the oil change intervals or using a lubricant with higher viscosity than required leads to oil lines clogging, resulting in the valve jamming.

Due to high loads on the engine, for instance, when driving at maximum rpm, burrs can appear on the component rod. Tensioners teeth are sometimes broken for the same reason.

Replacement of the timing chain tensioner

You can install a new timing chain tensioner by yourself. For this, follow the instructions:

  1. To reach the component mounting place, you need to demount the air filter and its pipe, the EGR system flex pipe, and move the engine oil dipstick tube to the side.
  2. Unscrew the tensioner bolts. If your car is provided with a hydraulic tensioner, detach the oil supply pipe from it before removing.
  3. Remove the tensioner.
  4. Remove and replace the gasket.
  5. Install a new part.
  6. Reinstall the dismantled equipment.

On some vehicle models you need to disassemble the engine in order to reach the tensioner. In such a case, it is best to seek professional assistance.
