Sway bar: useful information
Stabilizer bar is a device in the vehicle suspension. It is a steel rod installed on the axle of the vehicle. It serves to reduce sideways movements when cornering. The independent suspension that is used in modern cars should be properly balanced the car to remain in horizontal position when cornering. The most important parameter of the stabilizer is its rigidity that may differ depending on the car model.
There are also stabilizers rigidity of which can be adjusted using an electric motor or a hydraulic control. So, you can adjust the chassis according to the situation. Such technologies are mainly used in special vehicles. Usually stabilizer fails because of connecting elements. Corrosion of metal or mechanical shock damage the stabilizer and it malfunctions. Crash when cornering or driving a rough road is a sign of failure. An accident can also be the reason of faultiness. In any case it is necessary to replace the stabilizer as soon as possible. It is dangerous to drive with a faulty stabilizer. In this case you will expose yourself to an increased danger.
In many cases it is impossible to repair the stabilizer, it must be replaced. It is not difficult to do as its construction is simple. Pay attention the stabilizer to fit you car model. Stabilizer will be quickly replaced at the service station. If you search spare parts for you car, we advise you to visit our internet shop. How to detect a fault of the stabilizer
There are two methods of inspecting stabilizers:
- Turn the wheel to one side to the full, then try to move the stabilizer link. In case of even the slightest free play, replacement is required, since the gaps significantly increase when driving.
- This method will require an inspection pit. Disconnect the stabilizer link, without disconnecting it completely, and turn it from side to side. If the component rotates freely, it is worn out. To diagnose the state of the second link, the car should be shaken vertically. In case of extraneous noise, the component is worn.
You may notice that the stabilizer may need diagnostics by the following symptoms:
- poor vehicle steerability, especially during cornering and braking;
- presence of unusual sounds in suspension;
- car body tilt;
- the vehicle pulls to one side when driving.
The reasons of stabilizer malfunction
The main cause of the stabilizer breakage is operating the vehicle on poor quality roads. A sharp blow may deform the stabilizer bar. Frequent weaker impacts damage the bushes. The bushes are also loosened due to sharp accelerations and abrupt braking, when the vehicle body often tilts.
Using the component beyond its established service life results in cracks on the dust boots of the bushes, drying up of the lubricant, and jamming of the joints.
The stabilizer failure results in accelerated wear of other suspension components, which may lead to a costly repair, therefore, in case of failure, stabilizers need immediate replacement.
Replacement of the stabilizer
Replacing the stabilizer is not difficult. Do the following:
- using a jack, remove the wheel;
- reduce the load on the suspension by putting a support under the arm of the wheel, and then lower down the vehicle;
- unscrew the fastening nuts of the component;
- replace the component;
- tighten the nuts;
- repeat these steps in the reverse order.
