Strut Bearing for auto

Suspension auto parts: Strut Bearing

How to detect the support bearing failure

The support bearing has to be examined every 20,000 kilometers. For this you have to open the hood, grasp the shock absorber strut with your hand in the area where it is fastened, and try to sway it. The freeplay in the bearing is typically indicated by the characteristic clicks and knocks that occur during the sway.

To inspect the support bearing, you can also sway the vehicle, by pressing on a fender. If the car body is moving, but the strut isn’t, the part has failed.

Examination of the bearing integrated into the strut mount is carried out in the following way: ask your assistant to turn the steering wheel in both directions several times, and put your hand on the shock absorber spring: thus you can detect the support bearing jamming.

You may identify that the support bearing needs to be checked by the following signs:

  • knock on the left or right side in the car front, increasing when cornering and driving on low-quality roads;
  • hindered vehicle response to steering commands;
  • misalignment of the wheels;
  • premature tire wear.

Causes of the support bearing faults

The component service life is intended for 100,000 kilometers on the average. But often the support bearing breaks down much earlier. Usually, this occurs due to driving on low-quality roads and contamination.

During operation, the support bearing sustains large shock loads that greatly increase when driving off-road. Besides, the aggressive driving style contributes to the part destruction:  when driving over rough surfaces at high speeds, all the force of the wheel shock falls precisely on the bearing.

Foreign objects, debris, dirt and sand, getting inside the component, increase the abrasive wear of the contacting surfaces, and cause the bearing overheating as well. High temperature can be damaging to the lubricant, which also results in increased abrasion of the mating components. Similar effects occur due to a lack of lubrication, so it is advisable to disassemble, clean and lubricate the part from time to time.

The moisture also has a disruptive impact on the part. It promotes the lubricant washing out, and causes corrosion of the part components. Eventually this leads to the bearing jamming.

Replacement of the support bearing

You can easily replace the support bearing on your own. But in the course of a new part installation you will need a spring compressor. If you do not have it, the part replacement is best to be entrusted to specialists of a service station.

If you carry out the procedure on your own, stick to the following instructions:

  1. Loosen the wheel fasteners.
  2. Lift the corresponding vehicle part with a jack.
  3. Secure the vehicle in place with wheel chocks.
  4. Remove the wheel.
  5. Detach the brake caliper, move it aside and tie it to the suspension.
  6. Unscrew the fasteners that attach the steering knuckle to the arm and the stabilizer link.
  7. Remove the fasteners that attach the strut to the upper side member and remove the assembly.
  8. Disassemble the shock absorber strut, after removing the spring with a spring compressor.
  9. Remove the faulty bearing and replace it with a new one.
  10. Reinstall all the parts, performing the steps in the reverse order.
