How to detect the clutch slave cylinder failure

Malfunctions of the clutch slave cylinder in most cases are easy to reveal: it is enough to lift the car with a hoist, to start the engine, to ask an assistant to depress the clutch pedal as far as it goes and check the unit. Cracks on the housing, its warping or corrosion, leakage of fluids from the dust covers and seals indicate that the part needs to be repaired or replaced.

For more comprehensive diagnosis, the component should be disassembled and examined. If the degree of the cylinder wear is too large, the assembly requires replacement.

You may identify that the clutch slave cylinder requires to be inspected by the following symptoms:

  • the clutch pedal free travel has increased;
  • the fluid level in the expansion tank has considerably decreased;
  • fluid traces have appeared on the part surface;
  • the pedal does not return to its initial position;
  • the car moves jerkingly;
  • worsened vehicle dynamics
  • gears shifting has become difficult;
  • burning smell in the passenger compartment.

Causes of the clutch slave cylinder failure

One of the most frequent causes of the slave cylinder leakage is wear of the sealing cups, as a result the required pressure is not created in the unit chamber when you depress the pedal. Premature disruption of rubber parts is often caused by usage of low quality or substandard brake fluid, neglecting its replacement intervals.

The protective dust cover can rupture due to the impact of moisture, dirt or road chemicals. This results in violation of the cylinder tightness, its contamination, and may lead to the ingress of air into the clutch drive system.

Mechanical damage to the housing can occur due to the ingress of stones and other foreign objects into it while driving.

Repair of the clutch slave cylinder

Generally, the part can be repaired. For this, you have to buy a special repair kit and replace the faulty parts. To disassemble the unit, use the following instructions.

  1. Dismantle the part.
  2. Put it in a vice.
  3. Unscrew the bleeder valve.
  4. With the help of a screwdriver, pry the protective cap and remove it together with the push rod.
  5. Pull the piston out of the cylinder, sliding it with a thin screwdriver.
  6. Remove the lock ring from the piston, then the spring and the washer, as well as the sealing rings, carefully pulling them with a screwdriver.
  7. Clean the part inside from dirt and deposits, clean the holes in its housing and the bleeder.
  8. Replace damaged components (spring, sealing rings, dust cap).
  9. Thoroughly flush the reinstalled parts in the brake fluid.
  10. Assemble the cylinder in the order reverse to removal procedure.

Replacement of the clutch slave cylinder

If the degree of the assembly wear is too large, you have to install a new cylinder. To replace the part, follow the steps in the order below:

  1. Loosen the hydraulic hose.
  2. Remove the retracting spring.
  3. Pull the cotter pin out of the hole in the push rod.
  4. Unscrew the unit fasteners to the transmission housing.
  5. Disconnect the hose end.
  6. Dismantle the cylinder.
  7. Drain the clutch drive system.
  8. Install a new part.
  9. Bleed the hydraulic drive system.
