Radiator Fan Switch for auto

Heater/Cooling System auto parts: Radiator Fan Switch

How to detect a faulty fan sensor

While driving, keep an eye on the engine temperature indicator on the instrument panel. If the indicator needle tends to the red zone, check operation of the cooling system fan. The reason of overheating may lie in the sensor responsible for activating the fan, or damaged thermostat, or failure of the fan itself, or an air lock formed in the system.

To check the fan activation sensor, an infrared thermometer can be used. Use it to measure the radiator temperature. If it exceeds 90-95 °C, and the fan is not activated, the sensor is most likely to be defective.

However, the most accurate way to locate the reason of engine overheating is a visit to a service station.

You may notice that the fan activation sensor needs diagnostics by the following symptoms:

  • the fan is not activated when the critical temperature is reached;
  • reverse situation — the fan runs continuously. This indicates that the contacts of the sensor do not open.

The reasons of fan sensor malfunctions

Fan sensor is a very important component. If its malfunction is not detected in time, the engine will overheat, and eventually it may need an overhaul, or even replacement. Therefore, the state of the cooling system is to be closely monitored. Very often, the reason of sensor failure is the end of its service life.

Operating conditions also influence the service life of the component. If the vehicle has long been used at temperatures above 30 °C, and the fan was operating most of the time, this may result in accelerated wear of the sensor.

In addition, the reason for component failure may be its poor quality. There are many counterfeit products in the market, which, unfortunately, do not last long.

Repairing and replacing the fan activation sensor

Since the fan activation sensor is a one-piece unit, it is not reasonable to repair it. If the component is faulty, it is to be replaced. Replacement can be performed without assistance; it is a simple and fast procedure. Do the following:

  1. Wait until the motor cools down.
  2. Disconnect the negative terminal from the battery.
  3. Drain all antifreeze from the radiator.
  4. Disconnect the terminals from the fan activation sensor.
  5. Remove the faulty component. Use caution in order not to damage the radiator.
  6. Screw in a serviceable component. Don't forget to install the gasket under the new part.
  7. Connect the new sensor to the wiring.
  8. Fill the system with new or preliminarily drained coolant.
  9. Connect the negative terminal to the battery.
