Mounting Kit for auto

Exhaust system auto parts: Mounting Kit

How to identify faulty exhaust system fasteners and joints

The components are best inspected from an inspection pit, or on a car ramp. Thoroughly inspect the components: corrosion, cracks, deformation, burnouts on the surface of the joints, destruction of rubber elements indicate the need to replace them. Then check the reliability of the exhaust system fasteners.

Then make sure that the exhaust system is airtight. For this purpose, ask an assistant to start the engine, and try to detect leaks. If smoke escapes through joints, then the clamps or connecting pipes may be loosened.

You may notice that fasteners and joints of the exhaust system require diagnostics by the following symptoms:

  • vibrations are felt in the passenger compartment;
  • intermittent knocking or rattling sound is heard from under the vehicle bottom;
  • smell of exhaust gases in the passenger compartment;
  • the exhaust system operates too loudly;
  • reduced engine power;
  • deteriorated dynamic performance of the vehicle.

The reasons of exhaust system fasteners and joints failure

Due to their location, fastening elements and joints of the exhaust system are constantly exposed to moisture, temperature changes, and aggressive chemicals. Therefore, the most common failures that may entail replacement are the corrosion or fracturing of material of the suspended dampers.

Quite often, the reason of breakage, cracking or deformation of the components is intense force applied when various objects are hitting the bottom of the vehicle, or when the car is running over obstacles. The risk of mechanical damage increases significantly if the vehicle is operated in adverse conditions, for example, off-road. Similar consequences may be caused by careless manner of driving.

The fastening elements and joints can fail not only due to the operating conditions, but also due to incorrect operation of other units. A heavily vibrating engine may cause premature loosening of clamps and flanges. While extremely high temperature of the exhaust gases results in burning out of joints and locking rings.

Replacing exhaust system fasteners and joints

In most cases, you can replace fasteners and joints of the exhaust system without assistance. You will have to put the vehicle on a car lift, an inspection pit, or a car ramp. The procedure depends on the component location.

Replacing the clip with the help of which the front exhaust pipe is attached to the exhaust manifold will require a special remover. The component should be released and carefully removed, after which a new component is to be installed in its place.

Replacement of muffler mounts is also easy: all you have to do is to unscrew the bolts that connect the mount to the bracket, move the mount aside, and dismantle it. To facilitate the installation of new components and to seal the joints of the exhaust tract, use special lubricants.

More detailed instructions about the replacement of fasteners and joints of the exhaust system are available in the technical documentation to the vehicle.

To reduce the cost of repair, we recommend buying exhaust systems assembly kits: usually they include clamps, mounts, gaskets, and other elements required for restoring the unit.
