Electric system auto parts: Light Bulbs

How to determine the faulty high beam headlight filament bulb

If a bulb only in one headlight is to be checked, use a portable test lamp, connecting it according to the wiring diagram specified in the technical documentation to the vehicle. If the test lamp does not light up after connecting, the reason of the bulb malfunction is the loss of contact between the central terminal of the bulb holder and the electrical wiring connector. However, if the test lamp lights up, the malfunction is likely due to filament burnout, bad contact in the bulb holder itself, or poor wires connection.

If not only headlights, but also rear stop lamps and parking lights do not light up, check if the fuse is burnt out. Before replacing this component, find the reason of failure; be sure to eliminate short circuit if necessary.

If component’s light is not intense enough, check signal stability in the circuit, and then inspect the headlight: moisture, dirt and mechanical damage may reduce light intensity.

You may notice that high beam headlight filament bulbs require diagnostics by the following symptoms:

  • indicator lamp on the instrument panel is on;
  • no light when the headlights are turned on.

The reasons of high-beam headlight filament bulb failure

Vehicle lamps have limited service life, which depends on the type of the component, and on its quality. Eventually, any lamp will fail. However, it happens that it burns out prematurely, for example, almost immediately after installation. There are several reasons to it.

Most often, premature component failure is the result of incorrect installation. Never touch a halogen bulb glass with your hand: the grease stains left on the glass will soon turn into soot deposit. This will result in a temperature increase on certain spots of the bulb glass and its destruction. Therefore, install lamps either wearing protective cotton gloves, or using soft lint-free cloth.

Frequent filaments burnout may be due to faults in the wiring. Instability of the electrical signal, poor contact in the bulb holder, loosened connectors, short circuit — all this has a destructive effect on the component. Installation of a too high-rated fuse results in similar consequences.

In many cases, malfunction of the light is associated with loss of tightness of the headlamp body. After getting inside, moisture and dirt not only settle on the bulb glass, but also cause terminals oxidation.

Another common reason of lamp failure is mechanical damage. As a result of a collision, the bulb may break, the filament may get torn, and the lamp base may be deformed or get damaged.

Repairing and replacing a high-beam headlight filament bul

Like most elements of car lighting system, lamps are not repairable. Faulty components are to be replaced. To restore circuit continuity, secure the ends of the wires, and clean oxidized terminals. To increase the bulb light intensity, clean the surface of the lens.

In case of unassisted bulbs replacement, be sure to wear gloves and observe additional safety measures:

  1. Use components without visible surface damage.
  2. Always choose components with the specifications recommended by the automaker. This applies not only to the headlight bulbs, but also to filament bulbs of the turn indicators, parking lights and other lights.
  3. To prevent a short circuit, switch off the car lighting before work.
  4. Let the bulb cool down completely before starting to remove it.
  5. After installation, adjust the headlight beams angle.

Replacing lamps in xenon headlights without assistance is quite dangerous, as they are under high voltage. In this case, it is better to seek help from professionals.
