How to detect a fault of the spring leaf

Spring leafs are to be diagnosed after every 10 thousand km of mileage. Testing of the components should be entrusted to professionals. Inspection does not always require dismantling the component. If the component is dismantled from the vehicle, it is inspected on a special bench that allows to simulate its working conditions. More thorough checking requires a roller stand. The degree of the spring deflection allows specialists to quickly detect a failure.

You may notice that the spring leaf requires diagnostics by the following symptoms:

  • road shocks are often fully transferred to the car body;
  • unusual noises are heard;
  • the vehicle regularly pulls to one side;
  • increased stiffness of the suspension;
  • one side of the vehicle is sitting low;
  • decreased road clearance.

The reasons of spring leaf failure

The most common reason for deformation of spring leafs is their poor quality. In case of constant car overloading and nonobservance of the vehicle maintenance schedule, aggressive driving style and driving off-road, poor quality components fail pretty fast.

Longitudinal displacement of the spring leaf due to shearing of the spring centre bolt leads to similar consequences. It is therefore recommended to regularly check reliability of the component's fasteners.

Breakage of a spring leaf followed by metallic rattling can be caused by loss or damage of the bump stop which increases stiffness of the suspension.

Corrosion occurs due to storing the vehicle in the open air, failure to repaint the spring leafs in due time.

Repairing and replacing a spring leaf

To prevent damage, regularly refresh paint and lubricate the locations where the leafs touch each other. This will prevent failure of spring pins.

If a spring leaf is broken when driving, place two wrenches on both sides of it, tightly wrap this structure with wire, and proceed to the service station. Pay special attention to avoid all potholes in the road.

If the component cannot be repaired, it should be replaced. To do so, you'll need:

  • loosen the nuts;
  • detach the shock absorber;
  • lift the vehicle and set it on a support to unload the component;
  • remove the pin, the thrust and the spring washers;
  • remove the spring;
  • remove the joints from the eyelets;
  • remove dirt and traces of corrosion, if any;
  • inspect joints, pins, shackles, washers;
  • If these components are serviceable, they may be used for the new component;
  • install the new leaf spring.
