Front Silencer for auto

Exhaust system auto parts: Front Silencer

How to detect the front muffler failure

First raise the car with a jack and examine the exhaust system. Visible cracks, corrosion, dents and burnouts on the front muffler surface show that the part needs replacement. Then start the engine. If smoke comes from the front silencer, then its tightness is impaired.

You can check if the muffler is clogged in the following way. First you need to detach the wire from the spark plug, and then start the engine and assess its performance stability at idle and when increasing the revolutions. Then stop the engine, unscrew the disconnected spark plug and restart the power unit. If it starts to work better, and smoke comes from the spark plug hole, then the exhaust system is clogged. During the inspection, to protect yourself from electric shock, connect a spare spark plug to the disconnected high-voltage wire.

To detect more precisely which of the exhaust system components is clogged, you have to disconnect the flanges behind the catalyst and drive the vehicle for a certain distance. If the engine power has increased and it has started gaining rpms better, most likely, the failure cause lies exactly in the resonator.

You may identify that the front muffler needs to be checked by the following signs:

  • increased fuel consumption;
  • unstable engine operation;
  • excessively loud sound of the engine;
  • abnormal popping and chugging noises while driving;
  • change of exhaust gas color;
  • engine overheating.

Causes of the front muffler failure

Quite common faults of the front muffler are mechanical damage resulting from intense force impact during an accident or hitting of the vehicle bottom by foreign objects. The risk of the part damage increases considerably if the car is used on poor surfaced roads. Due to the constant running over potholes and bumps and aggressive driving style, the muffler fasteners and the joints of the exhaust pipeline can become loose.

The impact of extremely high temperatures is also destructive to the resonator. Usage of low-quality fuel, the ignition system faults, the intake pipeline clogging cause the fuel to get into the exhaust system, which makes the exhaust gas temperature considerably higher.

The front muffler corrosion occurs due to the impact of moisture, dirt, chemicals and temperature changes. Parts produced from stainless or aluminized steel are more resistant to aggressive conditions of use.

Front muffler repair

Sometimes cleaning helps to restore the part performance. You can remove dirt and carbon deposit from the muffler with the help of a blowtorch, evenly heating its surface to a certain temperature. But it is better not to overuse this method: due to repeated heating, the metal from which the part is produced becomes more brittle.

You can also remove deposits inside the component using chemicals. To do this, you have to remove the muffler,  plug up its inlet hole, pour inside an alcaline-based solution mixed with hot water, plug up the second hole, shake the part several times and leave for a day. Then wash the part with cold water and wipe with a soft cloth.

Small cracks and warping of the muffler can be eliminated at a service station. In case of more serious defects it needs replacement.

Replacement of the front muffler

On cars where the exhaust pipe components are connected by mounting clamps, you can replace the front muffler by yourself. For this you need to:

  1. Remove the clamp that attaches the connecting pipe to the resonator, after unscrewing the corresponding nuts.
  2. Dismantle the pipe by carefully knocking it through a wooden plate.
  3. Loosen and remove the clamp connecting the intake pipe and the resonator.
  4. Unscrew the muffler mount fasteners from the frame bracket, remove the washers from the studs.
  5. Disconnect the intake pipe and the resonator and disassemble the latter.

If the installation of a new component requires welding, seek professional assistance.
