Exhaust system for auto

How to detect faults of the exhaust system

We recommend to start with acoustic analysis, that is, you should listen carefully to the sounds coming from the running engine and the exhaust system. The norm is a smooth sound of medium volume, complete absence of extraneous sounds (from rattles and screeches to whistles and shots). The next step is to conduct a visual inspection. First of all, pay attention to mechanical damages, corrosion, melted elements. If the examination has given no results, we recommend to seek assistance from experts who will conduct computer diagnostics at the service station.

You can notice that the exhaust system requires diagnostics by the following signs:

  • back-shots of the exhaust system;
  • frequent overheating of the power unit;
  • reduction of the engine power;
  • appearance of the peculiar smell in the passenger compartment;
  • extraneous sounds during moving;
  • increase of engine loudness.

Causes of the exhaust system faults

One of the most common causes, which lead to breakdown of the exhaust system elements, particularly, the silencer and the catalyst, are mechanical damages. Usually, they appear during running over the obstacles, hitting by stones or other solid objects during movement and also as a result of road accident. Vehicles which are operated in off-road conditions or on the roads with poor quality surface, are at a greater risk. Thawing salts cause destructive influence to exhaust system components as well.

Due to their location, the silencer and the catalyst body are more exposed to moisture effect than the other components. That is why non-observance of the vehicle storage conditions, or its operation in areas with moist climate commonly cause corrosion of these elements. Driving through puddles may also play a negative role: abrupt change of temperature leads to destruction of the catalytic converter insert.

Failures of the other systems and units can lead to faults of the exhaust system. For example, misfiring caused by faulty operation of the timing system, or improperly functioning oxygen sensor may lead to a situation when a part of the fuel doesn’t burn in engine combustion chambers but in a catalyst, which is fraught with melting of the latter. Usage of low-quality fuel (for example, with metal-containing additives) or burning of oil during engine operation contributes to catalyst soiling.

Sometimes installation of poor quality components or errors during mounting lead to premature wear-out of the exhaust system elements.

Repair and replacement of the exhaust system

We recommend to repair the exhaust system at a service station only. In some cases, to replace a faulty element of the system, you will need a welding machine. A damaged sector that is intended for the replacement is cut out and a new one is welded to its place. We remind you that the catalytic converter of the exhaust system contains substances that are extremely dangerous to human health. Replacement of the catalyst should be performed every 120 000 operational kilometers.
