Generally, exhaust manifolds break down because of wear. In the course of time high temperatures and corrosion result in cracks and holes. Small holes can be welded up. If it is a serious damage, replacement is required. It is quite easy to dismantle the old exhaust manifold. First you need to remove sheet metal cover. Then unscrew the nuts on the exhaust manifold.

Causes of Exhaust Header failures

  • the part is depressurized;
  • header temperature varies;

  • gaskets are damaged or worn out;
  • component fixations damaged.

Diagnostics

First of all dismantle the component in order to estimate its condition. It is necessary to begin with collector check to find damages of mechanical character, and part geometry violation. After that check the reliability of the fasteners. The system must be pressure-tight not to allow the exhaust to flow away. More detailed diagnostics of the component will require the specialized stand and computer-aided equipment.

The component made of cast iron is operated about three years, and lifetime period of the stainless steel collector ( in case of mechanical damages absence), can reach seven years as such part does not get rusted.

Repair and replacement of collector

Repair can eliminate insignificant part defects and breakages. Use welding to repair small gashes. However it is necessary to remember that if the collector is made of stainless steels, it will lose part of its properties and will become less strong. Processing on the milling machine will allow to return the component initial form. Such preventive measure will  prolong  the manifold service life a little. If the component got rusted, it needs to be replaced.
