How to identify engine failures
You will need the special equipment to perform the complex diagnostics of the power unit. For this purpose we recommend to apply for assistance of professionals, who will fairly estimate the condition of the lubricating, fuel supply and cooling systems, the alternator, as well as control and ignition systems. However, you can independently carry out an external examination through which you can assess operation of components and condition of consumables, as well as temperature parameters of operation. During inspection you can also detect corrosion or cracks on the working surface. Specialists recommend to carry out computer diagnostics every 80 000 – 100 000 operational kilometers.
You may notice that the engine needs diagnostics according to the following signs:
- appearance of strange sounds during engine operation and at its start;
- engine stalls at idle;
- increased fuel consumption;
- frequent engine overheating;
- increase of oil and fuel pressure;
- activation of the “check engine” indicator.
Causes of engine failures
Detonation, erratic or irregular functioning of the engine at high rotation speed, loss of its power or even a full stop can occur for a number of reasons. The most common of them is the use of low-quality components and consumables, as well as non-observance of the power unit maintenance schedule. Mechanical deformation of a pump or a radiator, destruction of crankshaft fastenings, filling the car with low octane fuel can also disable the engine.
Engine repair and replacement
You can conduct some of the works on your own. For instance, replacement of consumables (oil or filters) can be performed easily. Besides, you can eliminate cooler leakage or repair a pump. However, you should contact professionals for the cylinder or piston replacement. Engine replacement should also be carried out at a service station.
