Coolant Temperature Sensor / Coolant Sensor for auto

Electric system auto parts: Coolant Temperature Sensor / Coolant Sensor

Coolant temperature sensor or engine temperature sensor serves to take engine’s temperature. As a rule, sensor is a thermistor – an electronic component resistance of which reduces when temperature rises. Resistance can be easily measured and on the basis of it you can determine and display temperature. Due to coolant temperature sensor driver always knows what is the temperature of the engine. It is very important to prevent overheating. In addition, you can control fuel quantity using engine temperature sensor. Warmed-up engine consumes less fuel then the cold one.

If temperature indicator shows meaningless figures, it’s most likely that the coolant temperature sensor failed. If there are no figures at all, it is possible that indicator failed or a wire is disconnected. In any case it is necessary to repair it immediately, because engine overheating may have grave consequences. As a rule, heat sensor is screwed in cylinder head. The most difficult task for an inexperienced motorist is to find where exactly the sensor is situated. The substitution itself is not difficult and may be done rather quickly.

It is necessary to disconnect wires, then to remove failed sensor and to place instead of it a new one. Then connect wires. Before this it is necessary to clean connections, especially if there is rust. The easiest way to check its functionality is a test drive. There is a big variety of car parts in our Internet shop, you can find here many parts for your car. Here you can buy ignition plugs, stub axles, brake blocks, fenders, air filter, back lights, headlamps, oil filter, bearings and many other car parts at reasonable prices. We do not save on quality!

How to detect coolant temperature sensor malfunction

The temperature value shown by the sensor must correspond to the engine temperature. If the part indicates high temperature while the engine is cool, and low temperature when the engine is hot, then the part is faulty. Checking of the sensor voltage must be performed by using a voltmeter. The voltage value of a cool part must be 3V on the average. The voltage must decrease to 0.5V if the temperature increases. If the inspection has detected that the voltage level is exceeding the norm, it means that there is no grounding. If the value is zero, then there is no input voltage or the wiring is short-circuited.

You can notice that the Coolant Sensor requires diagnostics by the following signs:

  • fuel consumption significantly increased;
  • amount of carbon dioxide in the exhaust fumes is exceeding the norm;
  • the engine start is hindered;
  • the engine operates unstably;
  • electric resistance of the part has sharply increased;
  • idle rpms increased.

Also sensor operability should be checked if the engine was overheated or was replaced.

Causes of coolant temperature sensor malfunctions

The coolant temperature sensor operates in quite aggressive conditions. It is constantly exposed to the destructive influence of chemical substances, variations of temperature and voltage, vibrations. The most vulnerable components of the sensor are seals, fastenings and the wiring.

In the course of time, the rubber seals, which are constantly contacting with the cooling liquid, lose their initial characteristics, wear or crack and stop performing their functions.  Loss of tightness by the engine cooling system results in many malfunctions, so if you noticed any traces of cooling liquid near the sensor, it should be replaced immediately. Sometimes, fastenings damaging caused by errors during installation, for example, excessive tightening torque during part screwing-in, may lead to appearance of clearances between the component body and its mounting seat.

Clips and contacts of the component are highly apt to corrosion. They also may break down due to variations of voltage in the electric circuit or the short circuit.

It happens that the sensor breaks down almost immediately after installation. Usually it is caused by the manufacture defect or by usage of the low-quality components.

Replacement of the Coolant Sensor

Usually, the component is not repaired and should be replaced at defects appearance. It is easy to perform by one’s own efforts. To do so, you need to disconnect the negative terminal from the battery and gain access to the sensor mounting location. Probably, you will need to demount the air filter. Then, the terminal block should be disconnected from the broken sensor, and the latter – be unscrewed. After that, you will only have to replace the defective part with the new one, connect the wires and install the removed units to their places.
