Clutch Release Bearing / Clutch Bearing

Clutch auto parts: Clutch Release Bearing / Clutch Bearing

Clutch bearing is present in any car with transmission. This part is necessary for declutching. If the driver pedals clutch pedal, the clutch bearing comes into action and frees from force on transmission shaft. As a result load relief on clutch plate occurs that becomes apparent because of driving speed reduction. This action will be back if the driver releases the clutch pedal. In this case clutch bearing returns to its primary position and transmission shaft begins to move.

It is easy to diagnose clutch bearing. Until the driver doesn’t pedals clutch pedal, there will appear noise. If this noise reduces or disappears when you pedal the clutch pedal, this confirms that clutch bearing is broken down. When declutching the clutch bearing presses disk spring and as a result details that are broken down compress. That is why noise level reduces. There is no reason to panic if there is such a breakdown. Till the clutch works there is no need to substitute it.

Of course, it is reasonable to change the clutch bearing if there is a visible defect. It is necessary to substitute clutch bearing if it doesn’t function. If the clutch bearing is damaged, faultless part of clutch can also break down. That is why it is in essence necessary to change disk spring, pressure plate and clutch plate. How to detect malfunction of the clutch release bearing

Extraneous noises in the clutch have various reasons. These sounds may indicate failures of the clutch release bearing, and malfunctions of the gearbox. To understand, which component requires repair or replacement, press the clutch and listen. If the noise stops, it means that the problem is in the gearbox. If the sound increases, the problem is in the bearing.

You may notice that the clutch release bearing requires diagnostics by the following symptoms:

  • extraneous noise with running engine and engaged clutch (especially in warm weather);
  • the clutch slips;
  • the engine often gets overheated;
  • smell of burning;
  • jerks.

The reasons of the clutch release bearing malfunctions

The most common reason of mechanical damage of the component is uneven loading due to prolonged pressing of the clutch with a gear engaged. This action is absolutely prohibited, and is considered to be the violation of the rules of component operation.

Abrupt starts and braking, and moving over potholes may also lead to deformation of, and permanent damage to the component.

Premature wear of the component may be caused by ingress of dirt and moisture under the gearbox case. In this case, lubrication is washed out from the bearing, and its operability is lost. Poor quality components fail very soon.

Replacing the clutch release bearing

The service life of the clutch release bearing is 150,000 kilometers of mileage. However, in case of excessive loads, it may need replacement already after 50,000 kilometers of mileage. If the elements of the components (not subject to repair) are damaged, or the service life has expired, the component is to be replaced. Remember to carefully follow the following instructions:

  • dismantle the gearbox;
  • disconnect the clutch from the retainer ends;
  • disconnect the retainer from the clutch;
  • unbend the tabs, remove the clutch, and the bearing from the bush;
  • remove the bearing from the clutch;
  • carefully inspect the new component for free play, and make sure it rotates freely;
  • install a new bearing, positioning it in such a way that the protruding part of its inner race would be directed away from the clutch;
  • secure the component in this position with a retainer;
  • lubricate the bush.
