Information
Window lifter is a device to roll up or down the window. There are mechanical and electrical window lifters. Today electrical window lifters are standard for modern cars. In old models mechanical window lifters are used. For a long period of time it was rather an expensive delight to install automatic window lifters. It is not only comfortable to use electrical lifters, but also safe. When driving, there is no necessity to turn an uncomfortable handle; you need just to push the button to open the window.
Ideally you can run the windows from the central console. Window automatically closes when the central locking is closed. In no small measure this helps to prevent car theft. It is not a good decision to install the mechanism directly on windows. Because of mechanical loading window lifters tear out. If it is necessary to apply force to turn the handle and there is noise when the window is rolling, it is necessary to change the handle. If there are noises in automatic window lifter, the problem is in electrical component. Most probably there is problem with lock.
It is not a difficult to change the window unit. First you need to remove the door covering. After the old window lifters will be uninstalled you need to install a new model. Before you put the door covering back, it is necessary to check if the system works. You can upgrade automatic window lifter more then once. How to determine a fault of the Window mechanism
First, inspect the fuse. If it is okay, check the voltage. To do so, use a multimeter. If no voltage is present, check the control unit, exclude relay malfunction and damaged wires. Next, start the engine and press the button on the window winder. If the mechanism is not responding, the electric motor brushes are faulty. Raise and lower the window several times in a row. Noise signifies that the bearing in the window gear motor is damaged. You should also check whether the cable is damaged or worn down.
You may notice that the window winder may need diagnostics by the following symptoms:
The reasons of window winder malfunction
All malfunctions of the window winder may be conditionally divided into electrical and mechanical ones. The former are the result of a short circuit in the car electrical system. As a result, the fuse burns out, therefore the window winder stops reacting to commands. Contact in connectors may be lost due to metal oxidation, which will also prevent the component from reacting to button press.
The reason of the latter type of malfunctions is a mechanical impact on the component. So, as a result of a road accident, the power or signal wire may be broken or damaged, and the window winder cable may be broken. Besides, tooth gear in the gear motor drive, and brushes of the electric motor may fail due to long operation.
Repairing and replacing the window regulator
First, lubricate the guides and the mechanism of the component, then remove the housing of the motor and extract the rotor. Using sandpaper, clean deposit from the brushes. You should also clean terminals of the buttons. If they were damaged due to mechanical impact, replace them. A worn tooth gear in the gear motor drive should also be replaced by a new one. If the drive and the unit are connected correctly, but the window doesn't lift, it is due to malfunction of the former. Therefore, the drive should be replaced. In case of serious malfunctions (failure of the fasteners or torn cable), the window winder should be replaced completely.
