The rubber (ribbed) side goes to the crankshaft pulley, i.e.
The ribbed side is inward, towards the pulleys (crankshaft, generator, compressor, etc.).
The smooth fabric side is outward (does not contact the pulleys, except for the tensioner rollers, if they are smooth).
Why is this so: The belt ribs enter the pulley grooves and create adhesion → transmit torque.
