Volkswagen Passat B5 Estate (3B5) cars: technical specifications, versions and trim levels
Volkswagen Passat 3B5 cars became a demonstration of the German manufacturer’s ideas on new quality standards for all brand’s models. Creating a comfortable, reliable and safe car with rich equipment was the set aim. A 5-door estate, which was launched in 1997 and produced till 2000, fully complied with these requirements. Its body was zinc-coated and had an 11-year warranty, equipment list included innovative technical solutions, many of them safety-improving, and a driver with four passengers could comfortably seat inside. The fifth generation estate car repeatedly took “The Best Family Car” title: in 1999 from the reputable “Auto Express” magazine and in 1998 from the British “Which?” magazine. Technical specifications of Volkswagen Passat 3B5
VW Passat 3B5 estate was larger than its predecessor: its length was 4675 mm, width – 1740 mm, height – 1459 mm. Thanks to increased external dimensions, the car cabin became more spacious, especially for rear seat occupants. Road clearance was reduced to 110 mm, which helped to improve handling and added stability to the car on the road. It could be up to 124 mm for some modifications to improve vehicle roadability. The luggage compartment capacity varied between 495 and 1600 litres.
26 modifications of Volkswagen Passat 3B5 (1997–2000) were released during production years: 14 petrol and 12 diesel ones. One of the most interesting was the 2.5 TDI 4Motion MT.
This all-wheel drive car was equipped with a V-engine developing up to 150 hp. A direct fuel injection system, turbocharger and manual transmission provided excellent dynamic characteristics with low fuel consumption. Time of acceleration to 100 km/h was only 10 seconds, and maximum speed of the estate car was 212 km/h. Meanwhile, fuel consumption on the highway was only 6 litres, 6.1 litres – in a combined cycle and 10.8 – in the city. The front multi-link suspension provided excellent handling. And the 4Motion part-time all-wheel drive system promoted efficient engine power distribution. Loading capacity of the car was 643 kg.
Configurations of Passat 3B5
Passat 3B5 cars were produced in four main trim levels – Base, Trendline, Comfortline and Highline. Even in the basic configuration the cars were notable for quite an extensive equipment list: front power windows, height-adjustable driver’s and front passenger seats, 4 airbags, railings on the roof. The dashboard was trimmed with high-quality soft plastic, while the steering wheel and gear lever – with leather. Inserts, imitating natural wood, served for interior decoration.
