The Suzuki Alto IV (HA11) was characterized by its compact dimensions. The length, width and height were 3295 mm, 1395 mm and 1400 mm respectively. The cabin could accommodate a driver and three passengers. The ground clearance was 150 mm. The car’s weight was low: only 600 to 710 kg, depending on the version.
The hatchback marketed in Europe was based on the platform of the Maruti Zen produced in India. It differed from the Japanese model slightly in its dimensions. It was 3495 mm long, 1495 mm wide and 1405 mm high. Depending on the rear seat configuration, the boot capacity varied from 210 to 1200 litres.
The front hatchback suspension was independent, the rear semi-independent. In most versions brake discs were installed on the front axle only. The rear axle was equipped with drum brakes.

Nine versions of the Suzuki Alto IV (HA11) were produced during the manufacturing period. All of them had petrol engines, while some were turbocharged. The cars usually had front-wheel drive, but four-wheel-drive versions were also available. The hatchbacks came with 5-speed manual and 3-speed automatic transmissions.
The 1.0 GL version was the most common. It was equipped with a 4-cylinder 8-valve engine with an output of 54 hp and maximum torque of 77 N⋅m. The port fuel injection system ensured good dynamics and saved fuel. The top speed of this version was 140 km/h. The fuel consumption in the urban cycle was 9 litres per 100 km, 6.1 litres in the extra-urban cycle and 7.2 litres in the combined cycle. The maximum loading capacity was 430 kg. It had front-wheel drive and automatic transmission.
Alto IV (HA11) trim levels
Alto IV (HA11) hatchbacks were offered in GL, GLS, Spirit, GA, Spark, Va, Vl, Vs, LE, SE, LF, LG, SF, SG and other trim levels.
The equipment was moderate. It could include anti-intrusion bars in the doors, three-point seat belts on all seats, fasteners for child seats, air-conditioning, a third brake light, a rear windscreen wiper, and a radio and audio system with a cassette player. 12-inch aluminium wheel rims, remote-controlled central locking and electric windows were available in some versions. The seats were trimmed with fabric. The steering wheel could have a leather cover. Metallic body paint was an optional extra.
