SAAB 96 Saloon cars: technical specifications, versions and trim levels
The Saab 96 cars are five-seat coupes which were manufactured from 1960 to 1980. They were assembled in Sweden, Finland and Belgium in different years. The prominent feature of these cars was a streamlined aerodynamic bodywork. These cars became one of the most successful vehicles in the history of the Swedish brand. The Saab 96: specifications
Depending on the year of production, the length of the Saab 96 coupe varied from 4050 to 4170 mm, width – from 1570 to 1575 mm and height – from 1461 to 1473 mm. The ride height reached 191 mm. The average weight of the car was 950 kg.
The front suspension of the vehicle was independent, of double wishbone type, while the rear one was semi-independent with U-beam axle design. Initially, all wheels of the car were fitted with brake drums. Since 1967, the front axle was fitted with brake discs.
Main versions
About 10 versions of the Saab 96 coupe were manufactured. They were all equipped with petrol engines and had front-wheel drive. They were fitted either with three- or four-speed manual transmissions.
The 0.8 MT version was popular. It was equipped with a three-cylinder sixteen-valve engine which produced 38 hp. Its torque was 81 N⋅m and could be achieved at 3000 rpm. The maximum speed of the coupe was 127 km/h. The versions produced in 1966 were equipped with the Solex carburettor which allowed to increase the power up to 46 hp. The car’s transmission was equipped with a freewheel which protected the engine from wearing out when coasting downhill. It also allowed to change speed without pressing the clutch pedal.

Depending on the market and the year of production, the Saab 96 cars were available in the following trims: Sport, GL, S, Monte Carlo.
In different years, the equipment included safety belts, active head restraints, fabric and rubber mats, mouldings placed around the car body, heated seats, halogen lights, tachometer, leather steering wheel, alloy wheel rims and a heated rear window. The interior could be trimmed with velour.
