BMW Z3 Roadster (E36) cars: technical specifications, versions and trim levels
The BMW Z3 vehicles (E36/7) are two-seat roadsters which had been manufactured between 1995 and 2002. It was the first company’s model which was manufactured solely outside Germany – in the USA. There were 279,273 units of these vehicles made over the time of the production. It is interesting that it was the roadster which was used as the James Bond’s car in the “GoldenEye” film. This fact was reflected in the commercials after the new model had been presented. They managed to succeed: right after the car went on sale, 15,000 units were bought. The manufacturer was even awarded the Super Reggie for the best marketing campaign. In 1999, this roadster was on the Ten Best cars list according to the Car and Driver magazine. The technical specifications of the BMW Z3 (E36/7)
The roadster was 4,025 mm long, 1,692 mm wide and 1,288 mm high. The capacity of the luggage compartment was 135 l. The ride height was 110 mm. After the facelift of 1999, the vehicle became bigger: its length, width and height were 4,050 mm, 1,740 mm and 1,288, respectively. The capacity of the luggage compartment extended up to 165 mm.
Main versions
All the versions of the BMW Z3 (E36/7; 1995–2002) were petrol and had rear-wheel drive. 7 were made before the facelift of 1999, 13 – after it. Apart from that, from 1997 to 2002, there had been 3 M sports versions manufactured.
One of the most powerful and dynamic ones was 3.0i AT (231 hp). It was fitted with a 6-cylinder 24-valve inline engine with multipoint fuel injection. Its maximum torque was 300 N⋅m and the number of revolutions of the engine could reach 5,900 per minute. The carrying capacity of the version was 270 kg. It took the roadster 6.3 seconds to accelerate to 100 km/h and its maximum speed was 236 km/h. The fuel consumption was relatively high compared to other versions: it took 14.3 l of petrol to cover the distance of 100 km in an urban area, 10.1 l – in the mixed cycle and 7.6 l – driving on a highway.
The trim packages of the BMW Z3 (E36/7)
Apart from the base one, the Z3 roadster (E36/7) was available in S and Sport Line configurations. There were also limited editions of car American style, Bella macchina, British traditional, Fidschi, Orinoco, Estoril, Imola, Kyalami, San Remo. Each of them featured its own range of equipment.
The Sport Line package of the car included anti-lock braking system, stability and traction control programs, front and side airbags. Sport seats were height adjustable, heated and trimmed with leather. The onboard computer, heated power mirrors, air conditioning and cruise control were installed on the plant as well. As an optional extra, it was possible to order a power-operated roof and 18-inch alloy discs.
