Main versions
Overall, there were 12 versions of the BMW X5 (Е53) manufactured: 4 petrol and 2 diesel ones before the facelift of 2003; the same number after it. One of the fastest versions was the petrol 4.8is AT (360 hp). Its 8-cylinder 32-valve engine with the torque of 500 N⋅m was designed by Alpina, the automobile manufacturer. Thanks to the brand variable valve timing system Double VANOS, the power of the engine is used more efficiently. The crossover accelerated to 100 km/h in 6.1 seconds. The maximum speed of the version reached 246 km/h. The fuel consumption was rather high: 18.7 l per 100 km in an urban area, 13.5 l in a mixed cycle and 10.5 l on a highway. The load capacity was 500 kg.
The all-wheel drive system based on the electronically controlled multi-plate clutch distributed the torque between the axles effectively providing the crossover with excellent characteristics not only while driving off-road but during speed cornering as well.
Trim packages of the X5 (Е53)
Apart from the base trim level, the X5 crossovers (Е53) were offered in some markets with Executive and High Executive packages. There were also equipment variants designed for the limited High Edition and Lifestyle Edition.
The range of standard equipment was huge and depended on the version. The list of available electronic systems included: anti-lock braking system with electronic brakeforce distribution, electronic stability programme, traction control and cornering brake control. The passive safety was provided by front and side airbags, active headrests, belts and Isofix fasteners for child seats. The optimal temperature inside the car was ensured by climate-control. It was also possible to order an electric sunroof. The sound system with a 6 CD changer was notable for quality sound. Adaptive headlights reduced the risk of a car accident.
